Mr. Moultrie DeLorme Plowden died August 15th, 2024, at 5:02 pm. He is survived by the love of his life, wife of 44 years, Mary Catherine Baker Plowden, his children of whom he was most proud, Kathy Hannah Plowden Smyth (Randy) of Luverne, Alabama, William Harper III of Bluffton, South Carolina, daughter in law Lisa Brownfield Plowden, grandchildren Richard Randall “Rann” Smyth of Troy, Alabama, Jesse DeLorme Plowden and Cassidy Hannah Plowden of Hilton Head Island, South Carolina.
A brother Robert William Plowden of Russelville, Alabama, sister Becky Wood of Eugene, Oregon, and son Steven DeLorme Plowden of Hilton Head Island, South Carolina predeceased him.
Mr. Plowden was born September 9th, 1935, in Florence, Alabama, son of Robert William Plowden, Sr. and Minnie Beckham DeLorme Plowden, both natives of Sumter, South Carolina.
He graduated from Darlington School in Rome, Georgia, attended Auburn University, and graduated from the University of North Alabama and the Thomas Goode Jones School of Law, Faulkner University, Montgomery, Alabama. He served his country in the U.S. Army Military Police Corps in Northern Italy.
In his 40-year career as a Healthcare Executive, he was associated with Baptist Health in Montgomery, Baptist Health System in Birmingham, Crenshaw County Hospital in Luverne, Saint Jude Catholic Hospital in Montgomery, Hilton Head Hospital and Carolinas Hospital System (Bruce Hospital) in Florence, South Carolina.
He served as Deputy Director of the Alabama Regional Medical Program and Associate Professor in the graduate program of Hospital and Health Administration at the University of Alabama in Birmingham for five years. He was an adjunct faculty with the University of Alabama Tuscaloosa and Auburn University Montgomery.
Mr. Plowden was a Life Fellow, American College of Healthcare Executives, and a member of the Royal Society of Health. A member of Bethel Presbyterian Church, he was a Ruling Elder and part-time Sunday School Teacher. Active in civic affairs, he was a member of the Walterboro Elks Lodge, involved with the Colleton County Museum, Historical and Preservation Societies, past chair of the Walterboro Wildlife Sanctuary, past president of the Hilton Head Lions Club, Charter Member and past president of the Florence, SC Breakfast Rotary Club, and the Walterboro Rotary Club. He was a multiple receiver of the Paul Harris Award.
In 2022, Governor McMaster awarded him South Carolina’s most prestigious service award, The Order of the Silver Crescent. At his death, he was Chair Emeritus of the Board of Trustees of the Colleton Medical Center.
He was a proud member of the Ancient Heraldic and Chivalric Order of Albion, instituted by his ancestor Sir Edmond Plowden in 1643 and the General William Moultrie Chapter South Carolina Sons of the Revolution.

A memorial service will be conducted at 4 o’clock Sunday afternoon, August 18, 2024, from Bethel Presbyterian Church, 403 Church Street, Walterboro. The Reverend Henry Meeuwse will officiate. The family will receive friends prior to the funeral ceremony beginning at 3 o’clock in the church sanctuary.
