Biography

Mrs. Maxine Bowers Avant, 82, of Willow Swamp Road, in the Ashton Community of Islandton, entered into her eternal rest surrounded by her loving family Sunday evening, May 13, 2012, at her home while under the care of Southern Care Hospice. She was the wife of the late Mr. John Clark Avant who died August 31, 1961.

Funeral services will be conducted 3 o'clock Wednesday afternoon, May 16, 2012, from Saint Paul Primitive Baptist Church, Highway 601, Hampton with Elder Robert Dobson and Elder Terrell Harvey officiating. Interment will follow in Cross Swamp United Methodist Church Cemetery, Cross Swamp Road, Islandton.

Mrs. Avant was born July 23, 1929, in Hampton County, and was a daughter of the late Horace Mack Bowers and the late Sara Tela Terry Bowers. She was a member of Saint Paul Primitive Baptist Church in Hampton and was a retired teacher's aid from Bells Elementary School. She was devoted to her family and will always be fondly remembered for the love for her grandchildren and the talent she had for decorating and baking wedding cakes.

Surviving are: a son, Patrick Clark Avant and his wife Donna of Ashton; three daughters, Linda Avant Hiott and her husband Foch of Ruffin, Minerva Avant McDaniel and her husband Ricky of Fork, and Carol Priester and her husband Randy of Ashton; and a brother, George Henry Bowers of Barnwell. There are thirteen grandchildren, Wendy Lee, Clark Hiott, Vivian Sipe, Regina Hiott, Dooley Hiott, Olivia McDaniel, Delta McDaniel, Rebecca Priester-Glover, Bradley Priester, Taylor Priester, Lauren Murdaugh, John Avant, and Matthew Avant; as well as eleven great grandchildren that also survive. She was preceded in death by a child, Gloria Maxine Avant; a grandchild, Barbara Hannah Priester; and siblings, Doris Bishop, Gatise lee Williams, Blanche DeLoach, and Horace Bowers.
