Mary Dean Graham

Mrs. Mary Dean Walkup Graham, 93, of 206 Greenbay Street in the Forest Hills Subdivision of Walterboro, entered into rest Saturday morning, June 22, 2013, at the Colleton Medical Center in Walterboro. She was the wife of the late Hamlin Graham, MD.

Funeral services will be conducted 11 o’clock Saturday morning, June 29, 2013, from Edgewood Baptist Church, 124 Wildwood Drive, Walterboro. The Reverend Lewis Faulkenberry officiating. Entombment will follow in Glendale Memorial Chapel Mausoleum, 2210 Mount Carmel Road, Walterboro.

Born March 4, 1920, a native of Pipestone, Minnesota, she was a daughter of the late F.C. Walkup and the late Bethel Grigsby Walkup. She was a graduate of Pipestone High School in Pipestone, Minnesota and had received her formal education from both the Carlton College in Northfield, Minnesota and the University of Colorado in Boulder, Colorado. She was a member of the P.E.O. Sisterhood and the Chi Omega Sorority. On August 23, 1942, she married the love of her life, an orthopedic surgeon, Dr. Hamlin Graham at Montview Presbyterian Church in Denver, Colorado. Mary Dean lived an active and productive life, always willing to serve and help where she could be a help to others. During her life, she was an assistant buyer for the Denver Dry Goods Department Store, and had also worked for Powers Department Store in Minneapolis, Minnesota before assuming the role as business administrator in her husband’s medical practice. She also served as a literacy instructor.

In a civic capacity she served as president of P.E.O. Sisterhood in Augusta, Georgia, was a Brownie and Girls Scout Leader, and served as a president of the Medical Auxiliary in Billings, Montana. Due to her husbands dedication and love for The Gideon’s International, she served as Chaplain to the Ladies Auxiliary of The Gideon’s International.

After making Walterboro their home, they were members of Bethel United Methodist Church in the historic district of Walterboro and after Dr. Graham’s death, she moved her membership to Edgewood Baptist Church.

Surviving are: three daughters, Sue McCunn of Walterboro, Jill Adams of Mystic, Connecticut, and Sally Irwin of Wheeling, West Virginia. There are four grandchildren, Scott McCunn, Gregory McCunn, Shawn Adams Sousa, Jr. and Jason Irwin, as well as ten great grandchildren, Jordan McCunn, Jack McCunn, Cade McCunn, Sam McCunn, Maren McCunn, Morgan Sousa, Connor Sousa, Caden Sousa, Celeste Irwin, and Jason Irwin, II.
