Mary Carter

Mrs. Mary Norris Carter, 91, of Ehrhardt SC, entered into rest peacefully at her Son's home in Moncks Corner with her family near her Friday evening, April 12, 2013.

Funeral services will be conducted 11 o’clock Wednesday morning, April 17, 2013 at the Ehrhardt Baptist Church, 427 Allen Street, Ehrhardt. The Reverend Tim McRee and The Reverend Kelly Shanks officiating. Burial will follow in the Bethany Cemetery near Ehrhardt.

Mary was born September 10, 1921 in Hartwell, Georgia to Guy Hammond Norris and Esther Ophelia Clinkscales Norris. She attended Hart County and Madison County Public Schools and also Piedmont College in Demorest, Georgia. Early in her life, she worked in the dietary department of the tuberculosis sanatorium at De la Howe, South Carolina. After World War II, she moved to Walterboro, South Carolina to be near her brother Baxter and his wife Myrtle. She worked as a waitress at the Lafayette Grill where she met the love of her life, Jacob H.A. Carter Jr, her husband of forty years. She was a member of the Ehrhardt Baptist Church and a life member of the Daughters of American Revolution. She loved her large family and dedicated her life to them.

Survivors include a daughter Nan C. All (Bob) of Seabrook South Carolina, four sons Lonnie N. Carter (Laurie) and Mark M. Carter (Sharon) of Moncks Corner, South Carolina, Andrew M. Carter (Lavet) of Ehrhardt and Albert H. Carter (LaShawn) of Beaufort, South Carolina. Also surviving are a brother John E. Norris (Betty) of Lake City, Florida, a sister-in-law Lilian Norris of Jasper, Florida, twelve grandchildren Jason All (Sarah), Robin All, Emily Carter, Sarah Carter, Jacob H.A. Carter IV, Andrew Carter II, Teresa Carter, Mary Elizabeth Carter, Victoria Carter, Adam Carter, Wesley Carter, Spencer Carter and three great grandchildren, Carter, Mathew and Connor All. She was predeceased by her husband Jacob, a son Jacob H.A. Carter III, a sister Rachel N. Dickerson and four brothers Frank, Rufus, Baxter and Wade Norris.

The family wishes to thank Barbara Smith and the staffs of Horizon Home Care and Hospice of Charleston for the compassionate care given to Mary.

In lieu of flowers, the family has suggested that memorial contributions be directed in Mary's name to the Ehrhardt Baptist Church, Post Office Box 267, Ehrhardt, South Carolina 29081; or to a charity of one’s choice.
