Obituary

Mary Anne Dantzler, born on July 11, 1944, in Walterboro, South Carolina, daughter of the late Eleanor and Herman Lee Dantzler, passed away peacefully on Tuesday afternoon, May 26, 2026.

She was a beloved mother, grandmother, sister, aunt, and best friend; affectionately called Mimi by so many who loved her. Mary Anne was known for her warmth, kindness, and unwavering love for her friends and family.

A 1966 graduate of Winthrop College, she was an educator having taught in the school systems of Columbus, Ohio and Buffalo, New York. She was a lifelong member of the First Baptist Church of Walterboro and was a member of the Mayfield Garden Club.

The community knew her from her many decades of work at H&D Supermarket, where she was a welcoming smile to so many. She loved fishing, spending time at Edisto, and being outdoors and watching her grandchildren grow up. Her gentle spirit and friendly nature made her a cherished presence in the lives of those around her.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Samuel Raymond DuPre; her son, Witt McKellar DuPre; and her loving sister, Jane Thompson.

Surviving are: a son, Daniel DuPre (Jill); her granddaughters, Emery Lee DuPre and Madelyn Park DuPre; and her brother, Herman Lee Dantzler Jr. (Linda) as well as their family. Her love extended deeply to all of them, including her nieces, nephews, great-nieces, great-nephews, cousins, and many other cherished family members, and she treasured the bonds that held them together.

Most of all, Mary Anne was thankful for her enduring friendship with Idella Robertson. Della was her softball rival, and tennis partner. They worked together and were fishing buddies, but most of all, Della was her best friend – they were nearly inseparable. But she was so much more than a best friend — Della had always been like family to her. The many adventures they shared meant the world to Mary Anne, filled with love, laughter, and memories she cherished dearly. Mary Anne’s family also wishes to thank the Robertson, Utsey, and Copeland families for all they have done for her, right up to her last breath. They always treated her like family.
