Marlene Thames Smith

Mrs. Marlene Thames Smith, 70, of Hampton, entered into eternal rest Monday, January 26, 2015 at her residence. She was the widow of Mr. Douglas MacArthur Smith.

Funeral services will be held 11 am, Wednesday, January 29, 2015 at Varnville First Baptist Church. Interment will follow in Grimes Cemetery.

Mrs. Smith was born June 17, 1944 in Varnville and was a daughter of the late James Vernon Thames, Sr. and Inez DeLoach Thames. She was a member of Varnville First Baptist Church , was an excellent seamstress, and loved gardening and watching her hummingbirds. She was a Teacher’s Aide at Wade-Hampton High School, a job she dearly loved. She will always be remembered for the love she had for her family and especially her grandchildren.

Surviving are: her children, Doug Smith and his wife Kathy of Springfield, Georgia, Kelvin Smith and his wife Angie of Elgin, and Katie Carr and her husband Kane of Hampton; grandchildren, Curtis DuBose, Michael Breland, Kristopher Carr, John Douglas Smith, and Victoria Carr; and a brother, Ray Thames of Columbia. She was preceded in death by two brothers, James Vernon Thames, Jr. and Eddie Dean Thames.
