Marion Baker, Sr

Mr. Marion Frederick Baker, Sr., 90, of Charleston, died Wednesday, August 31, 2011. He was the husband of the late Emmaline Price Baker.
Graveside funeral services will be held 11 am, Tuesday, September 6, 2011 at Beaufort National Cemetery.
Mr. Baker was born June 9, 1921 in Atlanta, GA and was a son of the late Jesse D. Baker, Sr. and Elizabeth Slemmons. He grew up in Charleston and finished Murray Vocation School in 1939. He worked as a ship-fitter prior to WWII and later as a draftsman at the Charleston Naval Shipyard. In WWII, he was a private in the US Army Air Force as a front-end nose gunner in the flight of the B-24 Liberators, 738th Bomber Squadron in the 454th Bombardment Group. The 454th completed 243 missions in Europe dropping over 13,000 tons of bombs on marshalling yards, oil refineries, bridge and other enemy supply installations. Later, he served in the US Army as a topographical artist and map maker stationed in post-occupation Japan from 1945-1952.
Surviving are: his sons, Kenneth Baker of Walterboro and Dr. Mark Baker of Ware Shoals; sisters, Doris Wright of Charleston and Teresa Reeves of Toccoa, GA; 6 grandchildren; and 6 great grandchildren.
