Mrs. Margie Jane Capell Tilley, of Walterboro, South Carolina, died at the age of 79 on Wednesday morning, December 12, 2012, of complications from Alzheimer’s disease.

A native of Easley, SC, born December 22, 1932, she was a daughter of Lily Pearl Knox Capell and Samuel Oscar Capell and the stepdaughter of Maud Jones Capell. An honors graduate of both Easley High School and Furman University, she married Dewitt Umstead Tilley Junior (1932-1985) in 1955. The couple resided in Greer, SC, and was active in Greer First Baptist and Northwood Baptist Churches. In retirement, she moved to Walterboro and was a member of Saint Jude’s Episcopal Church.

Mrs. Tilley possessed keen passions for bird watching, decorative arts, antiques, gardening, cooking and classical music. As a gifted pianist from a young age, she was a popular accompanist, teacher and church musician. She directed the Meals on Wheels program for Greater Greer Community Ministries and was a member of the board of directors for Camp Marietta. Through the years, her detailed preparation of Brunswick stew brought many adoring males to her kitchen door.

Surviving are her son, Richard Graham Tilley of Greensboro, North Carolina; her daughter, Susan Tilley Martin and her husband L. David Martin of Walterboro; and her son, John William Tilley and his wife Tricia McCorgray Tilley of New London, New Hampshire; her grandchildren, Emma Marie Tilley, Anna Julia Tilley, Knox Capell Martin, Peter Christian David Martin, and Nicholas Patrick Martin; and her sisters, Alice Capell Mann (widow of Joseph Mann) of Burlington, North Carolina, and Carol Capell Newsom and her husband Raymond Newsom of Lake Keowee, South Carolina.
Her caretakers were Linda Kofron, Mary Metts, Courtney Smith, Pam Robertson, Debbie Martin, Sharon Pinckney and Agape Hospice.

The relatives and friends of Mrs. Margie Jane Capell Tilley are invited to attend her funeral services at the Woodlawn Memorial Gardens Mausoleum in the Remembrance Chapel, 1 Pine Knoll Drive, Greenville, South Carolina, at 11:00 o’clock Saturday morning, December 15, 2012, with The Reverend Bob Horowitz as officiant. The family will receive friends following the committal ceremony in the Chapel of the Mausoleum.

A private Holy Communion Service for the family will be held at Saint Jude’s Episcopal Church. Family and friends are invited to call from 6:00 until 8:00 this Thursday evening at the Martin Home, 201 Warren Street in the Historic District of Walterboro.

The family has requested that in lieu of flowers, memorial contributions be made in her memory to the following: Greater Greer Community Ministries/Meals on Wheels Program, 738 South Line Street Extension, Greer, SC 29651; Saint Jude’s Episcopal Church, 907 Wichman Street, Walterboro, South Carolina 29488; or to, YMCA Camp Coniston , PO Box 180, Grantham, New Hampshire 03753.
