Mamie Dell Avant

Mrs. Mamie Dell Pye Avant, 80, of Walterboro, died Sunday morning, June 22, 2025, at her residence while under the care of Edisto Home Care and Hospice.

Born December 28, 1944, in Walterboro, South Carolina, she was a daughter of the late Eugene Pye and the late Mamie Crosby Pye.  Mamie Dell worked a long and dedicated career of over thirty years with the Colleton County School District, having retired as a Head Cashier.  She was a member of Doctor’s Creek Baptist Church in Walterboro, where she was formerly active in Sunday School and was a part time worker in the church’s nursery.  She loved her family unconditionally and always centered her life and activities around them and her grandchildren.   A fan of Elvis, she also enjoyed listening to country and gospel music.  She enjoyed trips to the beach and vacations in the Great Smokey Mountains.   Without fail, you could often find her watching “Gunsmoke” and the “Golden Girls”.  An excellent southern cook, she will always be remembered for her famous mac and cheese.  She was was a huge animal lover, loved birdwatching, and tending to her flowers and roses which brought her lots of joy. She was preceded in death by her first husband in 1975, Mr. Clarence Bowers.

Surviving are: her husband of forty-five years, Mr. Ronald Lee Avant; four children, Chris Bowers, Heath Bowers (Windy), Matt Avant (Heather), and Marshall Avant (Micki); eight grandchildren, Tyler, Blake, Ainsley, Abby, Landon, Noah, Luke, and Gracie; as well as a host of great grandchildren.

The family wishes to express their heartfelt gratitude to devoted friend, Cathy Hutchinson as well as the staff of Edisto Home Care and Hospice.

In lieu of flowers, the family has requested that memorials be directed in her memory to: Edisto Hospice, 301 North Lucas Street, Walterboro, South Carolina 29488.

Funeral services will be held on Saturday, June 28, 2025 at 3:00 in the Brice Herndon Walterboro Chapel.
