Mr. Luther Heyward Bryan, Jr., 82, of Ruffin, entered into rest Tuesday evening, July 7, 2026, at his residence.

Born October 2, 1943, in Colleton County, South Carolina, he was a son of the late Luther Heyward “Luke” Bryan, Sr. and the late Ruby Drawdy Bryan. He served our country faithfully in the United States Navy during the Vietnam Era and was a retiree of the Charleston Naval Shipyard. Heyward was no stranger to hard work and possessed an unwavering work ethic. In his earlier years, he worked in corporate management of Kentucky Fried Chicken and for Ford Motor Company. He was also the owner and operator of Bryan Trucking Companyas well as the former A & M Trucking Company. He was of the Baptist faith and was a life member of Bells Masonic Lodge, No. 236 – Ancient Free Masons. As a licensed pilot and had privately flown a twin-engine plane.

He was preceded in death by his first wife of thirty-six years, Mrs. Carol Lee Nelson Bryan.

Surviving are: his wife of twenty-five years, Mrs. Karen Carter Bryan; two daughters, Beth Frank (Johnny) of Walterboro and Angie Bryan (Jack) of Ruffin; three brothers, Roy Bryan (Elaine), Leon Bryan (Gayle), and Gary Bryan (Brenda); two sisters, Betty Duncan of Walterboro and Joyce Linder (Bert) of Ruffin; six grandchildren, Ashley Cain, Megan Cain, Bryan Ketchum, Jeremy Frank, Nicole Frank, and Drew Frank; and three great grandchildren, Sebastian, Ryan, and Sarah Rose. He is also survived by Karen’s family to include her four children, Dell Carter (Kim), Tim Carter (Pam), Clay Carter, and Jeffery Carter (Tammy); eleven grandchildren; and nineteen great grandchildren. Additionally, he was preceded in death by a sister, Carol Jean Bryan; and a brother-in-law, Tom Duncan.

The family wishes to express their heartfelt appreciation to the staff of Amedisys Hospice for the love and care they provided to Mr. Bryan and to his family.

Funeral services will be conducted at 1 o’clock Friday afternoon, July 10, 2026, from The Brice W. Herndon and Sons Funeral Chapel, Walterboro. Interment will follow in Bryan Family Cemetery in Ruffin.
