Biography
Mrs. Lula Mae Douglas Thomas, age 75, of Sunrise Road near Smoaks, while in the comfort of her family entered into her eternal rest Sunday morning, July 31, 2011, under the care of Heartland Hospice at her home. She was blessed with knowing true love twice in her life, having first been married until his death to the late Mr. John Harold Crosby, and secondly for thirty years to Mr. Jacob Clare "Jake" Thomas.
Funeral services will be conducted 4 o'clock Tuesday afternoon, August 2, 2011, from The Brice W. Herndon and Sons Funeral Chapel, Walterboro with The Reverend Kenneth Burr and The Reverend Ashley Brunson officiating. Interment will follow in Glendale Memorial Cemetery, 2210 Mount Carmel Road, Walterboro.
Mrs. Thomas was born October 30, 1935 in Mcbee, South Carolina and was a daughter of the late Ellison Douglas and the late Milbra Linder Douglas. She was a great southern cook always preparing the most delectable in southern style dishes. For many years, she was employed in the cafeteria of Smoaks Elementary School before beginning with Dukes Bar-B-Q in Walterboro where during her many years as dedicated employee became a well known icon to the Walterboro community as well as to those who would drive for miles to dine in this restaurant. She was raised in the United Methodist faith and has for many years been a member of Green Pond United Methodist Church on Highway 61 in Smoaks, where with a smile, gave of herself in any aspect of the church's work. She was also a member of the Order of the Eastern Star.
Surviving in addition to her husband are: a daughter, Peggy Elaine Shadrick of Winston Salem, North Carolina; a son, Don Neil Crosby of Ruffin; two sisters, Barbara Ann Drawdy and her husband Johnny of Walterboro and Miriam D. Sharp and her husband Calvin of Round O and two brothers, James E. Douglas and his wife Mickie of Walterboro and Roger Douglas and his wife Susan of Saint George. There are three grandchildren, Christopher Shadrick and Johnny Shadrick both of Winston Salem, North Carolina and Julia Crosby of Branchville and five great grandchildren that also survive. She was preceded in death by a son, Anthony Harold Crosby; and a brother, Ronnie Douglas.
