Mrs. Lula Mae Smoak Carter, 96, of Smoaks, entered into eternal rest Thursday, January 30, 2014 at her residence. She was first married to the late Herman Smoak and secondly to the late Harry Carter.
Funeral services will be held 2 pm, Sunday, February 2, 2014 at The Brice W. Herndon and Sons Funeral Home, Ehrhardt-Bamberg Chapel. Interment will follow in Denmark Cemetery.
Born May 13, 1917 in Barnwell County, she was a daughter of the late Talbert Burley Black and Mary Jane Hutto Black. She was a retired seamstress from Smoaks Manufacturing. She was a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, Barnwell Branch, where she was a former Relief Society President and Sunday School Teacher. She had also served through her church, in the Washington, DC Temple for 2 years as well as the Atlanta, Georgia Temple.
Surviving are: her children, Mary Louise Linder and her husband Garner of Smoaks, Floyd Smoak and his wife Yvonne of Rossville, Georgia, Jack Smoak and his wife Katherine of Lexington and Daniel Smoak and his wife Ann of Pelion; brothers, Frankie Black and his wife Dixie of Lexington and Burley Black and his wife Mary of Walterboro; 20 grandchildren; 57 great grandchildren; and 31 great great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by brothers, Clyde Black and Marion Black; and sisters, Mary Brown and Delma Myles.
