Mr. Leslie Norman Smith, affectionately known by many as Cookie, age 65, entered into rest at his home on Berry Farm Road in Carlisle, South Carolina following an extended illness.
Funeral services will be conducted 11 oclock Saturday morning, October 4, 2014, from The Brice W. Herndon and Sons Funeral Chapel, Varnville. Interment will follow in Beaver Dam Baptist Churchyard, 4611 Beaver Dam Road, Ridgeland.
Born August 10, 1949, a native of Grays, South Carolina, he was a son of the late Norman Elbert Smith and the late Irma Lee Williams Smith. He served in the South Carolina Army National Guard. He graduated from McKenzie College with his Associates Degree in Science and then Century University with his Bachelor of Arts in Minor Public Administration. Mr. Smith served Jasper, Hampton, Beaufort, Chatham, Lexington, Oconeee, Clarendon, and Newberry Counties in the Tax, Appraisal, and Real Estate Business since 1972. He was a retired Tax Assessor from Lexington County and prior to that worked as the Tax Assessor until his first retirement from Oconee County. Having at one point owned and operated his own real estate business in Beaufort, he was a South Carolina Real Estate Graduate and also obtained a MAI Designation which is the highest point an agent can reach in their education and certifications. He was a member of Philippi Baptist Church in Union and prior to moving his membership there, was a member of South Union Baptist Church where he served on the deacon board. He was a member of the South Carolina Baptist Association, the Celiac Foundation, the Appraisal Institute, and the United States Tennis League. He possessed an avid love for tennis which was his favorite pastime and through that devotion received numerous tennis awards over the years. Also, his devotion to his trade and passion for real estate also allowed him the privilege of not only a distinguished career but also to be the recipient of many professional accommodations and awards. He will forever be cherished in the hearts of his family for always centering his life around them being a wonderful husband, father, and grandfather.
Surviving are: his wife of forty eight years, Mrs. Dora Williams Smith; his daughter, Tammy Michelle Smith Kean and her husband David of Union; and a brother, Richard Donnie Smith and his wife Vickie of Grays. There is one grandson, Hugh Kean and his wife Carley; and a nephew, Christopher Smith. He was preceded in death by a brother, Ray Smith; and a nephew, Richard Dustin Smith.
