Leonard W. Kitchings

Walterboro, South Carolina

Mr. Leonard Wallace Kitchings, 85, entered into rest Wednesday morning, July 24, 2019, at his home in Walterboro while under the care of Amedisys Hospice.

Born November 6, 1933, in Barnwell County, South Carolina, he was a son of the late Leslie Ernest Kitchings and the late Leona King Kitchings.  He served our country faithfully in both the United States Navy and the United States Air Force during the Korean Conflict.  He was an electrician having worked for South Carolina Electric and Gas at their Canadys Power Plant.  He was a longtime member of Edgewood Baptist Church in Walterboro where he was active in many aspects of the church’s work.  He was an Ordained Associate Pastor, and at his beloved church, he taught the Young Men’s Sunday School Class, served on the Deacon Board, and was a member of the Brotherhood Group.  He dearly enjoyed fishing and woodworking.

Surviving are: his wife of sixty-four years, Mrs. Myra Lightsey Kitchings; two daughters, Terri Y. Stallings and her husband Billy of Jacksonboro and Connie L. Kitchings of Walterboro; a sister, Barbara Sarmiento of Miami, Florida; two grandchildren, Laura Beth Lewis and Erica Stallings; and four great grandchildren, Ian Christlieb, Isabella Christlieb, Isla Lewis, and Bennett Bazzle.  He was preceded in death by his four brothers, William L. Kitchings, Ernest P. Kitchings, Leslie E. Kitchings, and John C. Kitchings.

In lieu of flowers, the family has suggested that memorial contributions be directed in his memory to the following:  Friends of Israel, Post Office Box 908, Bellmawr, New Jersey 08099; or to, Jacksonboro Baptist Church Pastoral Mission Trip, 114 Wisteria Road, Green Pond, South Carolina 29446; or to, Amedisys Hospice, 305 A Robertson Boulevard, Walterboro, South Carolina 29488.

Funeral services will be conducted 2 o’clock Saturday afternoon, July 27, 2019, from The Brice W. Herndon and Sons Funeral Chapel, Walterboro.  The Reverend Riv Temple officiating.  Interment with military honors will follow in Glendale Memorial Cemetery, 2210 Mount Carmel Road, Walterboro.
