Mr. Leonard Walter Nettles, Jr., affectionately known by many family members and friends as Pork Chop, age 49, of 115 Josie Drive, Walterboro, entered into his state of eternal rest Wednesday morning, May 12, 2010, at the Trident Medical Center in North Charleston after an unexpected illness.



The relatives and friends of the Nettles family are invited to attend the Funeral Mass of Christian Burial for Leonard Walter Nettles, Jr. which will be conducted 10 oclock Saturday morning, May 15, 2010 from Saint Anthony Roman Catholic Church, 925 Jefferies Boulevard, Walterboro. Final Commendation and Farewell will follow in Glendale Memorial Cemetery, 2210 Mount Carmel Road, Walterboro. Serving as casket bearers will be Donald Herndon, Johnny Nettles, Steve Byrd, Michael Smith, Jo Jo Wobbleton, Ricky Lyons, Andy Singletary, Carlos Marin and Layton Brown. Honorary escorts will be members of the Knights of Columbus and employees of J.H. Hiers Construction Company. Honorary escorts are asked to assemble at Saint Anthony Church by 9: 30 that morning.



Following the funeral mass, a reception will be held at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Donald A. Herndon, 301 Dorsey Street, Walterboro.



Mr. Nettles was born December 29, 1960, in Colleton County and was a son of the late Leonard Walter Nettles, Sr. and the late Lola Mae Nettles Nettles. He was an employee of the former Nettles Sand Company which now operates as J. H. Hiers Construction in Walterboro. For several years, he has been associated with The Brice W. Herndon and Sons Funeral Homes through each of their locations, a job that he was dedicated to and possessed an extreme passion for. Leonard loved everyone and was always willing to go beyond his call to help all those he could, and served his people well through his association with the funeral home. He was a member of Saint Anthony Roman Catholic Church in Walterboro and was a member of the Knights of Columbus. He was a Past Master of Unity Masonic Lodge No. 55 Ancient Free Masons in Walterboro, a position that he held twice within the Lodge, where he was a member for many years before moving his membership to Bells Masonic Lodge, No. 236 Ancient Free Masons in Ruffin. Leonard will forever be remembered for the love he had, the smile that summarized his true character, and the uncanny ability he had to always lighten any mood with his unmatched sense of humor.



He was a member of the National Wild Turkey Federation and for several years coached Little League Baseball. He was an avid hunter always loving a good hunt with his son and friends having been a member of various hunting clubs over the years; and was an avid NASCAR Motor Sports fan, having this past weekend attended the Darlington Southern 500 race.



Surviving are: his wife of twenty-four years, Mrs. Isabel Valdizan Nettles, a son, Steven Matthew Nettles of Walterboro; and a daughter, Adrienne Marie Nettles of Walterboro. There are two surviving uncles, Billy Nettles and James Nettles both of Walterboro; as well as, a host of loving cousins and close friends whom he considered as extended family.
