COTTAGEVILLE- Reverend Leon C. Ferguson, Jr., 84, affectionately known as Junior, of 61 Meeting House Lane, went to his heavenly home on Sunday, January 25, 2009, at his residence. Reverend Ferguson was born in the early morning of October 5, 1924 in Cottageville and was a son of the late Leon C. Ferguson and Sheppie F. Ferguson. He and his wife, Richie O. Poland, were married January 4, 1947. Junior had a varied career, from being a logger with his father and brothers, to working as a foreman at the Army Depot. He was also employed by JP Stevens and retired from the South Carolina Highway Department. He was a retired Pentecostal Holiness pastor, ministering several churches throughout his lifetime. He was a long time member of the Edisto Pentecostal Holiness Church, serving as the Pastor for many years, and after retirement as the Adult Sunday School teacher. He was a Navy veteran of World War II serving on the USS LST 226. During the war he served in the Pacific Theatre and participated in The American Campaign. He was a graduate of Emanuel College. Junior was a delight, always joking and making others feel happy. He loved writing about the Bible and poems. He will be missed by all that knew him.



Funeral services will be held at 1:00 PM, Tuesday, January 27, 2009, at the Edisto Pentecostal Holiness Church.

Burial with military honors will be in the Meeting House Cemetery.



Surviving are: his wife of sixty two years, Richie O. Poland Ferguson; his four children, Brenda Evans of Branchville, Shirley Frasier and husband, William of Ridgeville, Donald Ferguson and wife, Diane and Gerald Ferguson and wife, Christi of Cottageville; brother Rufus Ferguson of Nipomo, CA; sister, Ruth Tippins of Saucier, MS; 8 grandchildren; 13 great grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his infant son, Little Ricky who passed away December 24, 1956; and his older brothers, James and Jesse.

The family will receive friends on Monday evening, January 26, 2009, from 6 to 8:00 PM at the funeral home.
