Mrs. Ruby Lenora Hall Godwin, 86, of Myrtle Street on Edisto Beach, entered into rest Wednesday morning, July 20, 2022, at her son’s home on Edisto Island.
Born January 20, 1936, in Charleston, South Carolina, she was a daughter of the late Ambrose Ackerman Hiott and the late Ruby Smith Hiott Henderson. She worked a long a dedicated career of twenty-five years at Belk Department Store in Walterboro, where she began with the company as a clerk and eventually retired as an assistant manager. She was a member of Edisto Beach Baptist Church, where she was active with the church’s annual Vacation Bible School. Lenora participated in the blanket ministry of Edisto Island and was a well-beloved member of her community. She for many years, was a hostess at Dockside Restaurant and enjoyed pet sitting, having one time bragged that she cared for and raised half of the animals on Edisto Beach. Her social life was important to her, she always had a smile and a glimmer in her eyes. She was the past treasurer for the Ladies’ Auxiliary of the Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks – Walterboro Lodge, No. 1988. Family was of the utmost importance to Lenora, she was a great southern cook and always centered her life around her loving family. She was preceded in death by her first husband in 2000, Mr. Alex Marvin Hall, Sr.
Surviving are: her husband, Mr. Robert A. Godwin; six children, Debbie Hall Gorrell (Ron) of Walterboro, Alex M. Hall, Jr. (Betsy) of Walterboro, Mike Hall (Melanie) of Clanton, Alabama, Scott Hall (Kate) of Edisto Island, Meg Herndon of Edisto Beach, and Gail Greer (Jeff) of Edisto Island; a brother, Ambrose “Sonny” Hiott of Ruffin; thirteen grandchildren; twenty-one great grandchildren; as well as host of beloved, nieces, nephews, and cousins that also survive. She was also preceded in death by her sister, Dorothy Hiott Smith and a son-in-law, Johnny Herndon.
Flowers will be accepted, or for those that wish, the family has requested that memorials be directed in her memory to the following: Edisto Beach Baptist Church, 414 Jungle Rd, Edisto Island, South Carolina 29438; or to, Animal Lovers of Edisto, 8112 Palmetto Road, Edisto Island, South Carolina 29438.
Funeral services will be conducted 11 o’clock Monday morning, July 25, 2022, from The Brice W. Herndon and Sons Funeral Chapel, Walterboro. Her grandson, The Reverend Samuel Tate Sutton officiating. Interment will follow in Doctor’s Creek Baptist Churchyard, 126 Doctor’s Creek Road, Walterboro.
