Mrs. Leatrice Joyce Rodgers, affectionately known as “Tootie”, 97, of Ridgeville, entered into eternal rest Friday morning, July 18, 2025, at her residence. She was the wife of the late Albert Elliott Rodgers, to whom she was married 69 years.
Born November 27, 1927, in Harmony Township, Pennsylvania, she was the daughter of the late William French and Audrey Slocum French. She was one of the first employees at the Baby Bottling Plant for Evenflo in Tionesta, Pennsylvania, which opened in 1957. She was then employed as the Officer in Charge for the post office in East Hickory, Pennsylvania. While serving as a postal clerk and Officer in Charge, she became the Postmaster, a position she held for 25 years, until her retirement in 1988. After retirement, she and her husband moved to Walterboro. Leatrice was a member of the American Legion Auxiliary Post 334 since 1965. Her favorite pastime was trapping mink, muskrat, and beaver, as well as deer hunting. She was an avid baseball fan and followed the Atlanta Braves for many years. She enjoyed making crafts by using plastic mesh and making lamps using flowerpots and beads. More than anything, she loved reading her Bible. She spent meany hours studying her Bible, praying, and counseling many family members and friends. She also loved her country and supported the military.
Surviving are: her son, William J. “Billy Joe” Rodgers and his wife Linda of Ridgeville; granddaughter, Stephanie Bacher; grandsons, Bobby Fielding and his wife Amy of Reynolds, Illinois, and Randy Fielding of Walterboro; great grandchildren, Mikkayla, Zachary, Kristopher, Marshall, Noah, and Ansley; great great grandson, Wyatt; and a special nephew, Tommy Young of Texas. She was preceded in death by a great grandson, Jaz Spencer Fielding; her siblings, Bertha Young, Eugene French, Gerald French, and Seyward French; a special aunt and uncle who helped raised her and her siblings, Carrie and Elmer; a special niece, Nancy Smith; and her dear friends, Martha and Calvin Fynch of Friendship, Tennessee.
The family would like to especially thank the team from Amedisys Hospice, Stephen (Chaplain), Brandy, Jenna Lynn, Nikki, and Kayla; Dr. John Mark Redwine who was her doctor for 36 years; Dr. Simms who was her doctor for 25 years; an extra special thank you to Melissa Hilton who called her grand-moma for 31 years; as well as special friends, Doug and Kim Kirven, Mikey and Bella, Ashley Nalley, Ronnie and Nori Kirven, David and Susan Edwards, and Paul Drowns.
A private memorial service will be held at a later date.
