Mr. Lawrence “Larry” Boykin Smith, 78, of Varnville, entered into eternal rest Friday morning, April 1, 2022 at his residence.
Born March 14, 1944, he was a son of the late Desmond Smith and Mildred Boykin Smith. Mr. Larry was a true servant to his beloved community. He served as a Reserve Officer for 27 years for the Hampton Police Department, retired from the South Carolina Highway Department after 32 years, and also worked for Hampton County for 24 years. He was a member of First Baptist Church of Hampton, where he served as a Deacon. In his earlier years he loved playing softball, but his passion was the Police Department. Mr. Larry loved his family dearly and especially loved family gatherings.
Surviving are his wife of 54 years, Amelia Ehrhardt Smith of Varnville; granddaughters, Meaghan A. Smith of Columbia, Bibiana A. Loza of Athens, Georgia, Adriana A. Loza of Varnville, and Maria A. Loza of Varnville; sisters, Patsy Cook of Zebulon, North Carolina and Judy Tuten of Ridgeland; sisters-in-law, Joyce Ehrhardt Bennett of Ehrhardt, Sharon Ehrhardt of Ehrhardt and Ellen Smith of Walterboro; and brother-in-law, William Glenn Ehrhardt and his wife Lanette of Cordova.
He was preceded in death by his daughter, Dodie Smith; brother, Dennis Smith; and brothers-in-law, Norris Cook, William “Tiger” Tuten, Cecil Bennett, Lewis “Tant” Ehrhardt, and Julian “Bubba” Ehrhardt, Jr.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial contributions be made to: American Diabetes Association, Post Office Box 7023, Merrifield, Virginia 22116-7023.
A memorial service will be held 2 o’clock, Sunday afternoon, April 3, 2022 at The Brice Herndon Funeral Chapel, Varnville. The family will receive friends for a time of visitation immediately following the service.
