Biography
Widow of the late Mr. Lloyd E. Catterton, Mrs. Lavinia Hiers Catterton, passed away at her home on Wednesday afternoon, May 7, 2014. Mrs. Catterton was born on June 14, 1932, in Colleton County. She was the daughter of the late Jervey Hiers and Rita Ulmer Hiers.
She is survived by her four sons, E. Ross Catterton (Denise), James G. Catterton and Michael L. Catterton all of Walterboro and Chester J. Catterton of Citra, Florida; and her eight grandchildren, Tina (Mrs. Catterton's caregiver), Michael Jr., Jason, Casey, Lisa, Jesse, Elizabeth, and Jim. She has three step grandchildren, Trae, Matthew, and Seth. She also has thirteen great grandchildren.
Mrs. Catterton retired from South Carolina Forestry Commission. She operated Stokes Fire Tower from 1952 until 1977. She was responsible for spotting and identifying forest fires and dispatching forestry firefighting units throughout Colleton County. She received several merit awards for her work. She also maintained a fire weather station to monitor fire conditions.
She was raised in the Methodist Church and in 1987 joined Black Creek Baptist Church with her husband, his home church. She was an active member and always enjoyed singing hymns of worship, praise and thanksgiving to the Lord Jesus Christ.
One of the things Mrs. Catterton enjoyed during her lifetime was when she and a group of young women known as The Hymn Girls used to sing on our local radio station, WALD, on Saturday morning.
Mrs. Catterton leaves a legacy of love and devotion for her children and grandchildren and their families.
In lieu of flowers, memorials can be given to Black Creek Baptist Church for the upkeep of the cemetery, 4931 Black Creek Road, Walterboro, South Carolina 29488.
A memorial service will be held 2 o'clock Friday afternoon, May 9, 2014, in Black Creek Baptist Church, 4931 Black Creek Road, Walterboro. Any remembrances of her life can be shared at this time.
