Lawrence (Larry) Frederick Schmitt, 79, of Walterboro, entered his heavenly home on Wednesday, June 12, 2024, at the Lowcountry Community Hospice House following a short but brave battle with aggressive cancer.

Born September 17, 1944, in New York (Bronx), New York, he was a son of the late Frederick Schmitt and Hildred (Wheat) Schmitt Britton.  He held several jobs during his lifetime including working in a foundry, for Sonoco Products, a fire fighter, and running his own gas station.  His favorite and longest lasting work was as the Plantation Manager at the Longbrow Plantation.  Larry was an avid outdoorsman who enjoyed fishing, shrimping, hunting, and gardening; but was especially know for and loved alligator hunting.  He liked riding motorcycles from his teenage years on.

Larry served in the South Carolina Army National Guard for six years, from November 1965 to May 1971.  He was a member of Green Pond Baptist Church, where he served as a Deacon for countless years.  He was on the building committee and helped with VBS and the annual Live Nativity.  He centered his life around his family and service to God.

Surviving are: his wife of thirteen years, Mrs. Laura Price Schmitt; a daughter, Tammy Rourk; a step daughter, Reba Hanna; step daughter-in-law, Cheryl Stansbury; step sons, David Hutchison (Jill) and Matthew Hutchison (Mindy).  He greatly loved his granddaughters, Stephanie Parham (Justin) and Kathy Spahn (Chris).  Also dearly beloved were his step-grandchildren, Petty Officer 2nd Class Jerry Stansbury, Aribella Stansbury, Michael Hanna and Kristina Hanna.  He was grandpa to three great grandchildren, Hailey Sarcinella, Emma Sarcinella, and Bentley Parham.  He was G-Pa to four step grandchildren, Drew Keeling (Samantha), Joshua Keeling (Brittnie), Mathew Keeling, and Addison Steigler.  He was great G-Pa to Winry, Riza, and Stormie Keeling.  He also had numerous nieces and nephews.  He was preceded in death by his first wife, Sarah Catherine Hopkins Schmitt; his second wife, Loretta Rose Price Schmitt; his two sons, Donald Schmitt and Richard (Ricky) Schmitt; brothers, Raymond Schmitt and Donald E. Schmitt; and a sister, Sandra Warren.

Funeral services will be held 3 o'clock, Sunday afternoon, June 16, 2024, at Green Pond Baptist Church, 12295 Green Pond Highway, Green Pond.  Interment will follow in the church cemetery.

The family will receive friends Sunday afternoon from 2 o'clock until the hour of service in the church sanctuary.
