Mr. Homer Lamar Harper, Jr., 93, of Hampton, entered into eternal rest Monday evening, October 21, 2024, at the John Edward Harter Nursing Center in Fairfax. He was the loving husband of sixty-six years to the late Mrs. Maxie Lee Long Harper.
Born August 6, 1931, in Summerville, South Carolina, he was a son of the late Homer Lamar Harper, Sr. and the late Caroline Kornahrens Harper. He served our country faithfully in the United States Army and was a retired postal clerk with thirty-six years of service to both the Hampton and Olar offices. He was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church in Fairfax where he served as Treasurer for many years, was on the Church Council and was a part of the church’s softball team. He was Chairman of John’s Field Softball Committee for two years. He was also an active member of the American Legion, Post No. 108. He served in a number of leadership positions as well as hut manager and finance officer. After his retirement, he worked in a “part-time” position for a number of years with H and R Block.
A good day for him was fishing on the Savannah River or shrimping at Sheldon. He will always be remembered for his love of fishing, shrimping, and crabbing as well as gardening and hunting. He was a lifelong fan of the Boston Red Sox.
Surviving are: four children, Rebecca Harper and her husband Jean-Pierre Bouchard of Quebec, Canada, Gaye Harper Hutto and her husband Leon of Hilda, Rachel Harper Kramer and her husband Jeff of Seabrook, and Homer Lamar Harper, III of Irmo; grandchildren, Courtney Kramer, Scott Kramer, Stephanie Hutto and Blake Hutto; great grandchildren, Laney Ray, Jackson Ray, Maddie Hutto, Nattalie Hutto, and Ethan Hutto; sisters, Gwen Barnes of Columbia; many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by a brother, Arnold Harper; and a sister, Helen Cook.
In lieu of flowers, the family has requested that memorials be directed in his memory to: American Legion Post 108, 302 Hoover Street, Hampton, South Carolina 29924.
Funeral services will be conducted at 2 o’clock Thursday afternoon, October 24, 2024, from Trinity Lutheran Church, 492 Hampton Avenue North, Fairfax. Interment with military honors will follow in Hampton Cemetery, Holly Street East, Hampton.
