Biography

Mr. Kermit Delano Barnette, 81, of Walterboro, entered into rest Tuesday afternoon, April 29, 2014, at the Veteran's Victory House in Walterboro while under the care of PH Hospice Care.

Funeral services with military honors will be conducted 12 noon Thursday afternoon, May 1, 2014, from the Beaufort National Cemetery, 1601 Boundary Street, Beaufort. The Reverend Mark Barnette officiating.

The family will receive friends after the funeral ceremony Thursday afternoon from 4 o'clock until 6 o'clock at The Brice W. Herndon and Sons Funeral Homes, Walterboro Chapel.

Born March 20, 1933, a son of the late John Smith Barnette and the late Letha Griffin Barnette. A native of Cleveland, Ohio, he made South Carolina his home following his retirement from the military. He served his country faithfully in the United States Air Force where at the time of his retirement had achieved the rank of Tech Sergeant after twenty years of service and had served during the Vietnam Era. He was an associate for thirty years at Barnette's Auto Part's in Sumter where he became a well-known icon in the community because of his selfless service in helping others. Kermit was an outdoorsman who loved fishing the local fresh water creeks and rivers and sightseeing on the Ashepoo River.

Surviving are: his wife of twenty-seven years, Mrs. Linda Crosby Barnette; his children, Kermit "Bubba" Barnette, Jr. and his special friend, Kathy of Columbia, Gloria Barnette of Salisbury, North Carolina, Yvonne Fantus and her husband Bill of Atlanta, Georgia, Saige Barnette of Walterboro, Kevin Miles of Seneca, and Derrick Miles of Allendale; and a brother, Carroll Barnette of Sumter. There are six grandchildren, Ethan Barnette, Brooke Bowman, Parker Miles, Joey Miles, Christopher Miles, and Mackenzie Miles.

In lieu of flowers, the family has requested that memorial contributions be directed in his memory to either the Veteran's Victory House or PH Hospice, 2461 Sidney's Road, Walterboro, South Carolina 29488.
