Mr. James W. Williams, Sr., 91, of Walterboro, entered his heavenly home on April 20, 2023. Born June 4, 1931, in Statesboro, Georgia, he was the son of the late Walter Warren Williams and Florrie Maebelle Shumans Williams. After the deaths of his parents, he was raised by his aunt, the late Wilma S. Mincey. He was the husband of the late Joan Carol Williams of Starke, Florida. Affectionately known to all as “JW,” he lived a long and fulfilling life.
JW graduated from high school in Baxley, Georgia, in 1948 and went to work for Seaboard Air Line Railroad as a signal service repairman. He was drafted into the United States Army on May 4, 1951, and served his country while stationed in Germany. After his military service, JW worked as a terminal manager in the trucking industry with several companies, including R.C. Motor Lines and Gator Freightways. He made Florida his home and became the owner and president of Crossdock Incorporated, a freight-handling company with terminals in Miami, Orlando, Jacksonville, and Tampa.
During his later years, JW had homes in both Starke, Florida, and Walterboro, South Carolina, and there were many friends and family members in both states who knew and loved him dearly. His joys in life were spending time with his family and watching any golf tournament he could find on television. He was a member of Green Pond Baptist Church, but most recently attended First Baptist Church of Walterboro.
JW is survived by a son, Rev. James W. Williams, Jr., and his wife, Pam, of Walterboro; two grandchildren, Jennifer R. Williams (Matt) of Islandton and James Austin Williams (Jessica) of Walterboro; and three great-grandchildren, Matthew, Madelyn, and Charlotte. He is also survived by his stepchildren: James Barber (Catherine), Mark Barber (Karen), and Angie Barber, all of Florida. He was predeceased by his first wife, Georgia Ann H. Williams; his daughter, Dottie W. Nettles; his son-in-law, Bobby L. Nettles; and a stepdaughter, Lynn Jackson (Tommy).
Memorial contributions may be made to First Baptist Church of Walterboro Capital Improvements Fund, 124 South Memorial Avenue, Walterboro, SC.
A graveside service will be held Sunday, April 23, 2023, at 2:00 p.m. at Glendale Memorial Cemetery, 2210 Mt. Carmel Road, Walterboro, SC. The family will receive friends immediately following the service.
