ROBERTS, Sonny
Mr. J.R. Sonny Roberts, Jr., 57, of 1051 Pellum Road, Walterboro, died Tuesday, May 20, 2008 at his residence.
Funeral services will be held 10 oclock, Thursday morning, May 22, 2008, at The Brice W. Herndon and Sons Funeral Home, Walterboro Chapel. Interment will follow in Greenlawn Memorial Gardens.
Mr. Roberts was born November 16, 1950 in Walterboro, SC and was the son of Mable N. Roberts and the late Junius Ray (June) Roberts, Sr. Mr. Roberts worked for many years for the City of Walterboro Fire Department where he was the Assistant Fire Chief fro twelve years, having been involved with all phases of the department to include general tactics, general supervision, personal, financial and budgetary matters. He also worked for Parris Island Fire Department, where he was a driver operator. He was a well known radio personality in the Walterboro community having worked for the WALD Radio Station, where began working part time following graduation from Walterboro High School and later taking a full time position in 1980. He began his career with WALD as a morning disc jockey before taking interest in Broadcast Journalism and Public Relations. He was promoted to Assistant News Director in 1982 and was then named the stations News Director in 1983, a capacity he held as well as Public Relations Director at his departure. He then held jobs with various positions at Bishops Body Shop and Car Quest in Walterboro.
During his career as a fireman, he was selected as Fireman of the Year for five consecutive years, received several letters of Commendation for bravery beyond the call duty. He was a member of Good Shepherd Evangelical Lutheran Church in Walterboro. He will be remembered for his love hunting, fishing, water sports, camping, photography, and NASCAR.
Surviving in addition to his mother of Walterboro are: a brother, John Charles Roberts and his wife Sandra of Walterboro; a sister, Susan Roberts Morgan and her husband Rodney of Lexington; his former wife, Mary Louise Roberts of Walterboro; and a daughter.
