Julian "Jug" Bowers

January 31, 1928 — October 28, 2014

Mr. Julian Willis Bowers, affectionately known to all as “Jug”, 86, of Adnah Church Road, Islandton, passed away Tuesday, October 28, 2014.

Funeral services will be held 3 pm, Sunday, November 2, 2014 at Peniel Baptist Church, 37 Forks Road, Islandton. Interment will follow in the church cemetery.

Born January 31, 1928 in Colleton County, he was a son of the late John Bowers and Letha Catterton Bowers. He served his country in the United States Army and retired from Westinghouse after 35 years of service. He was a member of Peniel Baptist Church and faithfully believed in donating blood through the American Red Cross, having donated one gallon. Anyone who knew him, knew that Mr. Jug loved to “piddle” in his yard, working with his animals and his tractors, always barefoot, with his coveralls on, a cigar in his mouth, and his great granddaughter, Macey by his side. Most of all, he was a loving husband, father, grandfather and great grandfather who deeply cherished his family, always centering his life around them.

Surviving are: his wife of 60 years, Helen Gould Bowers of Islandton; daughter, Lawanda Brunson of Fairfax; step-children, Elmira Robertson Upchurch of Goose Creek and James Arnold Chesser of Orlando, Florida; 8 grandchildren, Gene, Julie, Ken, Lacey, Jimmy, Candy, Nancy Jo, and Theresa; many great grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by a daughter, Nancy Jo Bowers; brothers, Woodrow Bowers, Riddick Bowers, Abraham Bowers and Wade Hampton Bowers; and sisters, Fannie Dopson and Ruby Preveaux.

The family will receive friends Saturday evening from 6 until 8 at THE BRICE W. HERNDON AND SONS FUNERAL HOMES, VARNVILLE-HAMPTON CHAPEL, 1074 Yemassee Highway, Varnville, 803.943.5016; www.briceherndonfuneralhome.com.
