Mr. Joseph Hughes Thompson, affectionately known by all as Mr. Joe, age 92, of 723 Peniel Road, Walterboro, entered into his eternal rest Wednesday morning, August 12, 2009, at his residence. He was the husband of the late Mrs. Linnie Bessinger Thompson, to whom he was married to for sixty-six years prior to her death in 2008.



Funeral services will be conducted 11 oclock Saturday morning, August 15, 2009, from Great Swamp Baptist Church, 3396 H0endersonville Highway, Walterboro, a church that he, along with many others, participated in the building of the current structure. Interment will follow in Live Oak Cemetery, Jefferies Blvd., Walterboro.



Mr. Thompson was born November 2, 1916, in Colleton County and was a son of the late Joseph Carl Thompson and the late Ruth OQuinn Thompson. He was a carpenter by trade having worked for many years along side his brother, the late Herman Thompson. He was a longtime member of Great Swamp Baptist Church in Walterboro where in pervious years was active in many aspects of the churchs work. He was an avid outdoors man, who loved to hunt for wild game and fish the local creeks of Colleton County. He was a member and former president of Peniel Hunting Club. He will be fondly remembered for the love he possessed for his family and others and for the smile that was always present on his face, which showed his true character.



Surviving are: two daughters, Jo Ann Long of Walterboro and June Barnhart and her husband Dean of Hunters, Washington; a son, Buddy Thompson and his wife Carolyn of Walterboro; a sister, Mildred Flowers of Boone, North Carolina; and two sisters-in-law, Billie Thompson of Charleston and Patricia Thompson of Walterboro. There are three grandchildren, Bud Long and his wife Mary Ann of Walterboro, Billy Long and his wife Caroline of Walterboro, and Christi Amick and her husband Anthony of Snow Camp, North Carolina; as well as five great grandchildren, Megan Long, Keera Stafford, Gregory Long, Kyleigh Amick, and Aidan Amick that also survive.



Flowers will be accepted, or for those that wish, the family has suggested that memorials be directed in his memory to: Saint Jude Childrens Research Hospital, 501 Saint Jude Place, Memphis, Tennessee 38105.
