Mr. Joseph Lincoln Mire, known affectionately to many as “Mr. Joe”, age 91, of Walterboro, entered into rest eternal Wednesday evening, November 22, 2023, at the Veteran’s Victory House in Walterboro.  He was first married to the late Thelma Catterton Mire and secondly to the late Jo-Jhan Hiott Barry Mire.

Born September 16, 1932, in Acadia Parish, Rayne, Louisianna, he was a son of the late Linest Mire and Aurelia Alleman Mire.  Mr. Joe served his country in the United States Marine Corp during the Korean War.  Following his time in the Marine Corp, he continued to serve his country in the United States Navy.  He also served faithfully at the Parris Island Fire Department, where he retired as Assistant Fire Chief.  After retirement, he spent many years working with the Walterboro Police Department as well as the Walterboro Fire Department.

If you knew Mr. Joe, you knew what mattered to him were his family, his country, his community and his church.  Mr. Joe was a devout member of Saint Anthony Catholic Church.  He served in every capacity at his church including organizing and preparing for Mass, maintaining the garden and grounds, serving as a Lector, and anything else he could find to do.  He was a member of the Knights of Columbus Father Brian Martin Council No. 8502, where he was a Grand Knight and was instrumental in establishing the local council.

As a community member, he was a member for forty-five years of the Walterboro Elks Lodge, No. 1988, where he served as Chaplain.  He volunteered much of his time at the Veteran’s Victory House, participated in many civic organizations, went to the Hardee’s Breakfast club daily, and had also served as the Booster Club President to the Band of Blue.

Surviving are: his son, Joseph Anthony Mire and his wife Marie of Spartanburg; his step-daughters, Debra Barry Jones of Round O and Kathy Barry Martin and her husband Paul of Round O; 4 grandchildren, one of whom provided great care and affection to Joe, India Martin Sweat (Bert) as well as William T. Jones (Beth), Sonny Martin (Chad), and Shelli Martin Hunt (B.J.); 8 great grandchildren; and a sister-in-law, Verlie Mier as well as a beloved host of nieces and nephews .  He was preceded in death by his brother, Raymond Mier; sister, Rita Mire Weaver; stepson, Josiah T. Barry; and grandson, Terry A. Jones, Jr.

In lieu of flowers, the family has requested that memorials be directed in his memory to: Saint Anthony Catholic Church, 925 South Jefferies Boulevard, Walterboro, South Carolina 29488.

The Relatives and Friends of Mr. Joseph L. Mire are invited to attend his Funeral Mass which will be said at 1 o’clock Tuesday afternoon, November 28, 2023, from Saint Anthony Catholic Church, 925 South Jefferies Boulevard, Walterboro.   Monsignor Thomas Hofman, Celebrant.   The Final Commendation and Farewell with Military Honors will follow in Black Creek Baptist Churchyard, 4931 Black Creek Road, Walterboro.   Following the interment, a reception will be held in his memory for friends and family in Trinity Hall at Saint Anthony Catholic Church.

The family has requested that the Knights of Columbus serve as Pallbearers and the Officers and members of Walterboro Elks Lodge serve as Honorary Escorts and their presence is requested in the Nave of the church at 12:30pm that afternoon.

The family will receive friends from 6 o’clock until 8 o’clock Monday evening with the Holy Rosary being recited prior to that at 5:45pm at THE BRICE W.
