Mr. Joseph William “J.W.” Bishop, Sr., 79, of Ruffin, entered into rest Monday evening, August 17, 2015, at the Colleton Medical Center in Walterboro.
Funeral services will be conducted at 11 o’clock Friday morning, August 21, 2015, from Shiloh Baptist Church, 10565 Lowcountry Highway, Ruffin. Reverend Ricky Crosby and Mr. Glenn Bishop officiating. Burial will follow during a private family committal ceremony at the Bishop Family Cemetery.
The family will receive friends prior to the funeral ceremony beginning at 10 o’clock that morning in the church sanctuary.
In lieu of flowers, the family has requested that memorial contributions be directed in his memory to: Shiloh Baptist Church, 10565 Lowcountry Highway, Ruffin, South Carolina 29475.
Born August 7, 1936 in Colleton County, South Carolina, he was a son of the late Joseph Washington Bishop and the late Myrtie Nettles Bishop. He retired from the Public Works Department of the Marine Corps Air Station in Beaufort and was a lifelong member of Shiloh Baptist Church. J.W. was a well-known woodworker, having crafted many beautiful and treasured pieces for friends and family, as well as for sale, during his many trips to the Colleton Farmers Market.
Surviving are: his wife of fifty-seven years, Mrs. Jo Ellen White Bishop; three sons, Joseph “Jody” Bishop, Jr. and his wife Debra of St. Marys, Georgia, Mike Bishop of Ruffin, and Glenn Bishop and his wife Roxie of Ruffin and a sister, Pauline Crosby and her husband Mike of Walterboro. There are eight grandchildren, Brandi Bishop, Bobbie Jo Bishop-Maynard and her husband Mark, Michael Bishop, Jessica Bishop, Krystle Creel and her husband Rodney, Andrew Bishop and his wife Ginny, Lauren Bishop, and Katelin Bishop; and seven great grandchildren.
