Biography
Mr. John Lee Smyly, Sr., 70, of Hale Drive, Walterboro, entered into rest Wednesday evening, March 12, 2014, at the Colleton Medical Center in Walterboro. He was the husband of the late Mrs. Ruth Jennings Smyly.
Funeral services will be conducted 3 o'clock Sunday afternoon, March 16, 2014, from The Brice W. Herndon and Sons Funeral Chapel, Walterboro. Interment will follow in Smyly Cemetery, Ruffin.
Born September 2, 1943, a native and lifelong resident of Colleton County, he was a son of the late Ernest Webb Smyly, Sr. and the late Pearl Carter Smyly. Ever since a young age, John has been known as a hardworking honest person. He devoted his life to his career and throughout the lowcountry of South Carolina and other parts of the United States his dedicated and devotion as an iron worker can be seen. A very family oriented person, he will be fondly remembered for his love of hunting and fishing - always the avid outdoorsman who spent many countless hours tending to his flowers.
Surviving are: his five children, Sonja R. Smyly Sutton and her husband Dan of Cottageville, Tonya Smyly-Huckert and her husband Joey of Walterboro, Rhonda Smyly Williams and her husband Elzie of Lodge, John Lee Smyly, Jr. of Walterboro, and Ruth Michelle Smyly Ballard and her husband Billy of Walterboro; a brother, J. Rodney Smyly and his wife Kathy of Ruffin; and a sister, Regina Shumpert and Henry of Leesville. There are seventeen grandchildren and his beloved Chihuahua, "Piper"; as well as several nieces and nephews that also survive. He was preceded in death by a brother, Ernest Webb Smyly, Jr.
