John Shelton

March 13, 1944 — June 17, 2011

Mr. John Edward Daniel Shelton, 67, of 129 Brookwood Court, in Sandy Springs Subdivision, of Walterboro, entered into his eternal rest Friday morning, June 17, 2011, at his residence.

A celebration of his life will be conducted 6 o'clock, Monday evening, June 20, 2011, from The Brice W. Herndon and Sons Funeral Chapel, Walterboro with The Reverend James W. Williams, Jr. officiating.

The family will receive friends following the funeral ceremony in the Harbiston Stateroom of the funeral home until 8 o'clock that evening.

Mr. Shelton was born March 13, 1944, in Madison County, North Carolina and was a son of the late Bill Shelton and the late Minnie Faulkner Shelton. He served his country by enlisting in the United States Army in 1962 and served until his honorable discharge in 1969, achieving the rank of Staff Sergeant. During his tenure in our armed forces he was a part of the Army Security Agency. He graduated from Eastern Michigan University in 1979 where he received his Bachelors of Business Administration. In Michigan, he met the love of his life who he chose to be his constant companion in life. They resided in Ypsilanti, Michigan, which was the birthplace of their two sons and where he worked for Michigan Bell Telephone. He worked not only in Michigan, but served many other assignments throughout the United States. He served this company faithfully until he had the time invested for first retirement. Upon the Shelton family making the Lowcountry their new home, John joined the group at Palmetto Rural Telephone Cooperative. He worked hard to demonstrate to our community and fellow co-workers his strong work ethic and dedication to his trade by continuing his same unending devotion to Palmetto Rural until his second retirement in October of 2010, holding the title of Manager of Regulatory Affairs. He made his name known to the Walterboro community through his work with our local telephone company where he established a name many people called for personally to handle their various business affairs. Through his employment and retirement from two telephone providers he was a member of the Telephone Pioneers.

Through membership in the Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks, Walterboro Chapter No. 1988, he demonstrated his willingness to help and serve where needed. At the Elks Lodge, he served as a Trustee and was a Sponsor of the Boy Scouts of America; an organization he held close to his heart after being a former Scout Master for the Cub Scouts in his earlier years. His hobbies included Billiards, Tennis and Reading (always carrying a book to read at any available moment).

Surviving are: his wife of forty-seven years, Mrs. Judy Hammond Shelton; his two sons, Jon Anthony Shelton and Jeffery Edward Shelton of Columbia; and two sisters, Joyce Naomi Hall of Arkansas and Terri Gail Garner of Georgia. There are two grandchildren, Teagan Antigone Denae Shelton and Tira Grace Shelton; as well as numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by a brother, Charles Shelton; and a sister, Shirley Shelton.
