John Leonard Newton

February 19, 1927 — May 7, 2017

Mr. John Leonard Newton, age 90, entered into rest Sunday afternoon, May 7, 2017, surrounded by his loving family at the Veteran’s Victory House in Walterboro.   He was twice married, first to the late Mrs. Henrietta Kirkland Newton and was the husband of Mrs. Betty Reeves Newton.

Funeral services will be conducted 2 o’clock Wednesday afternoon, May 10, 2017, at Edgewood Baptist Church, 138 Wildwood Drive, Walterboro.   Interment with military honors will follow at 4 o’clock that afternoon in Live Oak Memorial Gardens, Ashley River Road, Charleston.

Born February 19, 1927, in Cottageville, South Carolina, he resided in Charleston for most of his life prior to making Cottageville his home again in 1989.  He was a son of the late George Lee Newton and the late Rena Hill Newton.   He served our country faithfully in the United States Army as a Private First Class and was a retired sales representative with thirty-five years of service from Wetterau Foods.   He was an active member of Edgewood Baptist Church in Walterboro, where he was active in many aspects of the church’s work.  At his church, he was a member of the Deacon Board, served on the Finance Committee, church teller, a member of the adult choir, and was a part of the men’s ministry.   He was a member and former secretary of the Jenkins Hunting Club.

Surviving in addition to his wife, Betty, are:  three children, George Lee Newton, II, Timothy David Newton, and Linda Newton Gee; four step children, Wilson L. Jones, Randall Jones, Diane Feole, and Pamela Cascio; six grandchildren; and seven great grandchildren.   He was preceded in death by a wife, Henrietta; a son, John Henry Newton; and three step-children, William D. Jones, David B. Jones, and R. Wayne Jones.

Flowers will be accepted for those that desire, the family has suggested that memorial contributions be directed in his memory to: Edgewood Baptist Church, 138 Wildwood Drive, Walterboro, South Carolina 29488.
