Dr. John M. King, Jr., age 74, entered into rest Friday evening, August 21, 2015, at his home in Ruffin, South Carolina while under the care of Amedisys Hospice.
Born January 12, 1941 in Kingsport, Tennessee, he was a son of the late John M. King, Sr. and the late Gladys Roberts King. He served our country faithfully in the United States Air Force, where he retired after twenty-one years of service as a Technical Sergeant. His tenure in the military included action during the Vietnam Era and involvement with the Intelligence Department. He received his doctorate in Anthropology from the University of South Florida. Dr. King lived life to the fullest. He was an avid golfer having been a former member of the Dogwood Hills Country Club, was a private pilot, and an accomplished artist having stroked many beautiful oil paintings. He loved skiing, scuba diving, and reading science fiction novels. He was a world traveler having spent a great deal of time in the Far East. He was of the Southern Baptist Faith, a member of the Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks – Walterboro Lodge No. 1988; and was a former member of MENSA International (a society for people with high I.Q.s). He will always be remembered for the love he possessed for animals, especially cats.
He is survived by his companion of twenty-six years, Ms. Maryann Seals.
In lieu of flowers, the family has requested that memorial contributions be directed in Dr. King’s memory to: Friends of Colleton County Animal Shelter, 33 Poor Farm Road, Walterboro, South Carolina 29488.
Funeral services will be conducted 2 o’clock Tuesday afternoon, August 25, 2015, with full military honors in Beaufort National Cemetery, 1601 Boundary Street, Beaufort.
