First Sergeant John Joseph Conklin, United States Marine Corps (Ret.), age 79, of Walterboro, entered into rest Saturday morning, March 12, 2022, at the Colleton Medical Center in Walterboro.
Born February 2, 1943 in Garnerville, New York, he made Walterboro his home for the last twenty years and was a son of the late Russell Conklin and the late Sadie R. Conklin. He served our country faithfully in the United States Marine Corps for twenty-five years, having seen action during the Cuban Missile Crisis and the Vietnam Era. He was awarded as a Sharpshooter and Rifle Expert. He was a member of the American Legion and Disabled American Veterans. He was a faithful member of Jacksonboro Baptist Church. John will always be remembered for his love of the outdoors and hunting.
Surviving are: his wife of fifty-eight years, Mrs. Lois Sisco Conklin; a daughter, Lois Kelley and her husband David of Walterboro; a brother, Robert Conklin of New York; and a sister, Mildred Halstead of New York. He was preceded in death by siblings, Marlene Buckley, Kenneth Conklin, Patricia Greeley, and Ronald Conklin.
In lieu of flowers, the family has requested that memorials be directed in his memory to: The American Heart Association, Post Office Box 840692, Dallas, Texas 75284-0692.
Funeral services with full military honors will be conducted at 2 o’clock Monday afternoon, March 21, 2022, from the graveside in Jacksonboro Baptist Churchyard, 14749 Charleston Highway, Jacksonboro. The Reverend Riv Temple officiating.
