John T. Cole

July 23, 1974 — February 2, 2026

Walterboro, South Carolina

(Ret.) City of Charleston Battalion Chief John T. “JC” Cole, of Walterboro, South Carolina, was received into Heaven Monday evening, February 2, 2026. Those who knew him can only imagine he was greeted with the words, “Well done, my good and faithful servant,” for that is exactly who he was. John leaves behind a legacy of unwavering service, mentorship, and devotion—to his profession, his community, and, most of all, his beloved family.

Born on July 23, 1974, and raised in Walterboro, John grew up surrounded by the close‑knit values of a small Southern town. An athlete during his years at Walterboro High School, Class of 1992, he developed lifelong passions for the outdoors. He found joy in visiting the mountains, working on cars, and riding motorcycles—interests that remained steady companions throughout his life.

John married the love of his life on May 31, 2003. Together, he and Terri shared an unbreakable bond for the last 28 years and were blessed beyond measure with a life marked by partnership, purpose, and steadfast support for one another. Terri remained his rock through every triumph and challenge, and together they built a successful real estate business. John cherished each and every associate in their brokerage and considered them part of the family. Above all, they treasured time spent with their families and traveling together.

Before joining the fire service in 2002, John studied industrial engineering at Beaufort Technical College while working full time in the electrical and engineering fields. He then pursued his career with CFD, later earning a degree in Fire Science from Columbia Southern University. During his nearly 25 years in the fire service, he was awarded numerous citation honors for his heroic efforts and lifesaving actions on behalf of the community he proudly protected.

Throughout his distinguished career with the Charleston Fire Department, John served primarily in Battalion 3 on Engines 2, 3, and 6, and he was a dedicated member of the Marine Team for several years. He later transferred to Engine 19 to prepare for leadership, ultimately earning the rank of Battalion Chief in January 2017. He carried that responsibility with humility, grit, and genuine care for his crews. He was deeply respected and profoundly admired by his entire department and by all who had the privilege of working alongside him.

John’s commitment to mentorship and continuous learning defined him. He valued every person who taught him—regardless of age or time on the job—and he often credited his mother, Kathleen, as one of his greatest influences and held deep gratitude for the constant and unwavering support of his father, Wayne. He carried that same spirit forward, always ready to show up for others, always willing to lend a hand, and always leading by example.

He was proud to be a Charleston firefighter. He held immense gratitude for the department, the work, and the people he served beside. His message to others was simple and sincere: take pride in your work, help one another, be thankful, and never forget the privilege of serving. John leaves behind a legacy of leadership, compassion, loyalty, and quiet strength—one that will continue to live on in the lives he touched and the department he loved.

Above all else, John considered his family his greatest success. He is survived by his devoted wife of 23 years, Terri Cole, along with his faithful dog, Gus, who remained by his side always; his parents, Wayne and Kathleen Shell; his sister, Sherry Player, and her husband, Al; his nieces Taylor “Bug” Cole, Shayann Webster, and Anna Crosby; and his nephews Aaron Crosby and his wife, Pharen, Asher Crosby, and Hayden Mock. He is also survived by his stepsister, Kimberly Mock, and her husband, Richard. He leaves behind seven cherished great‑nieces and one great‑nephew, each of whom held a special place in his heart. He is also fondly remembered by his many aunts, uncles, and cousins, all of whom held a special place in his heart. He was preceded in death by his biological father, Thomas Kelley Cole.
