Mr. Joel Dewayne Smith, affectionately known by many as Smitty and J.D., age 73, of Welles Lane, Walterboro, entered into his state of eternal rest Sunday morning, June 20, 2010, in Walterboro.
Funeral services will be conducted 3 oclock Thursday afternoon, June 24, 2010, from The Brice W. Herndon and Sons Funeral Chapel, Walterboro with The Reverend Dr. Walter T. Doyle, The Reverend Roger Quesenberry, The Reverend Daniel Cooper, and The Reverend Earl Peeples officiating. Interment with Masonic Rites will follow in Glendale Memorial Cemetery, 2210 Mount Carmel Road, Walterboro.
Mr. Smith was born January 2, 1937, in Nettleton, Arkansas and was a son of the late The Reverend Odis Smith and the late Wallace Lecroy Smith. He served his country faithfully in the United States Air Force and after his time in service dedicated his career to law enforcement. His first call of duty was with the City of Rock Hill as a policeman before moving to the South Carolina Highway Patrol where he was stationed in Beaufort before receiving a promotion in the early 1970s to Walterboro. At his retirement in 1980 he had achieved the rank of Corporal. He was a South Carolina State Constable, a position he had been awarded and up-held for many years. He was a Master Mason and continued with his degree work to join the Omar Shrine in Mount Pleasant and also the York Rite. He was a member of the South Carolina Troopers Association (Silver Bears) and was a former member of the Loyal Order of the Moose and Hiotts Pasture Hunting Club. J.D. was a man of good character, who was a rock and strong hold for not only his family members but for so many others in his community. He readily made himself available for anyone that was in need, and he will be forever remembered for the care he provided to many.
Surviving are: his wife of thirty-five years, Mrs. Jo Ann Hiott Smith; five children, Wayne Needham and his wife Kathy of Walterboro, Mike Needham and his wife Sonya of Islandton, Jimmy Needham, Sr. and his wife Debbie of Phoenix, Arizona, Kerry Needham and his wife Tracie of Walterboro, and Susan Johnson and her husband Kenny of Walterboro; there are two whom he loved as his children, Roger Hiott of Islandton and Kerry Michael Canady of Walterboro; two brothers, Leland Smith and his wife Mitzie and Glenn Smith and his wife Bobbie of Chattanooga, Tennessee; and a sister, Juanita Wilson of Fort Lauderdale, Florida. His mother-in-law, Mrs. Cora Crosby Johns of Walterboro; as well as eighteen grandchildren; and seven great grandchildren also survive.
