Mrs. Joann Smith Whetstone, 82, of Smoaks, entered into eternal rest Wednesday, October 2, 2024.
Born October 28, 1941, in Colleton County, she was the daughter of the late Clifton Smith and Laurette Padgett Smith. She was lovingly cared for and raised by her great uncle and aunt Zach and V Harrison. Joann was a member of Little Swamp Methodist Church. She was the owner and operator of the Little Swamp Corner Store and Whetstone General Store for twenty-two years. She was a talented seamstress and had worked at Smoaks Manufacturing. Joann is lovingly remembered for her joy and passion for thrifting and shopping. She loved to help people and she cared deeply for her animals.
Surviving are: her sons, James Harrison Cooke (Tonia) of Illinois, Burnette Whetstone, Jr., (Ashley) of Bamberg; daughter, Cherie McDonald (Chuck) of Columbia; sister, Lillian Butler of Columbia; grandchildren, Alex, Caleb, Tanner, Joshua, Frankie, Daniel, Wesley, and Tarah; eight great-grandchildren; a host of nieces, nephews, and other extended family.
Mrs. Whetstone is preceded in death by her first husband of 11 years, Norris Cooke; her second husband of 21 years, Burnette Whetstone, Sr.; daughter, Donna Crosby; granddaughter, Ciaya Whetstone; brother, Pete Smith; sister, Frankie Trull; brothers-in-law, George Butler, and Marvin Trull.
The family would like to send a heartfelt thank you to Gentiva Hospice of Orangeburg and her caretaker, Shirl Brown, for the love and care they have given Mrs. Joann during this time.
A meal to celebrate the life of Joann will be held for friends and family 1 o’clock, Saturday, October 5, 2024, at Little Swamp Methodist Church, 17465 Hunters Chapel Road, Smoaks.
