Jimmy Cavanaugh

August 2, 1945 — December 5, 2019

Walterboro, South Carolina

Mr. James William Cavanaugh, Jr., known by all as “Jimmy”, age 74, of Walterboro, entered into rest Thursday morning, December 5, 2019, at the Colleton Medical Center in Walterboro.

Born August 2, 1945 in Dover, New Jersey, he was the son of the late James William Cavanaugh, Sr. and the late Gladys Norman Cavanaugh.  Jimmy worked a dedicated career of thirty years with J. P. Stevens; having started as a loom fitter at their textile plant in South Boston, Virginia before the company moved him to Walterboro in 1971, where he eventually retired as a supervisor.  He then became an agent with American General Insurance Company, where he again retired after twenty years of service.   He was lifelong member of the First Baptist Church of South Boston, Virginia and had faithfully attended the Walterboro Church of God of Prophecy.  Professionally, he was a member for twenty years of the National Association of Insurance and Financial Advisors and the Insurance Advisors Political Action Committee.   He was a Master Mason holding his membership at Unity Masonic Lodge, No. 55 – Ancient Free Masons in Walterboro and was also a member of the Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks - Walterboro Lodge No. 1988 and the former Walterboro Loyal Order of the Moose.  He enjoyed the outdoors and was an avid hunter.  Jimmy possessed an excellent talent with cooking, often competing and placing in competitions.  He loved Nascar Motor Sports Racing and was an avid support of both Dale Earnhardt Jr. and Sr.  One of his greatest loves was his 1954 Chevy Pickup, which he had a great sense of pride in; but the greatest of his loves was that of his family, whom he adored.

Surviving are: his wife of fifty-three years, Mrs. Susan Satterfield Cavanaugh; three children, Donna Cavanaugh Craven and her husband Johnny of Walterboro, James William “Bill” Cavanaugh, III and his wife Holly of Walterboro, and Jason Wayne Cavanaugh and his wife Elizabeth of Walterboro; four grandchildren, Sarah Craven, Shelby Craven, James William “Miles” Cavanaugh, IV, and Lily Cavanaugh and a great grandchild, Kate Emerson Davis; as well as many nieces and nephews.   He is also survived by two cousins, Butch Norman and Bobby Henderson.  He was preceded in death by his sister, Brenda Siffert and a nephew, Joey Siffert.

In lieu of flowers, the family has requested that memorial contributions be directed in his memory to the following:  Walterboro Church of God of Prophecy, 114 Peurifoy Road, Walterboro, South Carolina 29488; or to, The American Alzheimer’s Association, 225 North Michigan Avenue, Floor 17, Chicago, Illinois 60601.
