Jimmie Mcmillan

January 23, 1935 — October 6, 2022

Islandton, South Carolina

Mr. James Clyde McMillan, known by all as “Jimmie”, age 87, of Islandton, entered into rest Thursday evening, October 6, 2022, at his residence.

Born January 23, 1935, in Islandton, South Carolina, he was a son of the late Charles Hiers McMillan and the late Geneva Murdaugh McMillan He worked for many years at Auto Zone in Walterboro where he was a beloved icon in our community as an always welcoming and helpful person.  He truly loved the Lord and was a devout Christian man.  He will always be remembered for his love of gardening.   Jimmy was devoted to his family, and was humble, genuine, and appreciative.

Jimmie was born during the 30’s and so he learned at an early age work ethics.  His first job was helping the family with the grits mill while still in school.  He then got a job after school at a body shop, where he learned of his many trades of restoring and painting automobiles.  Jimmie served in the United States Air Force during the Korean Conflict, having been stationed in Alaska.  Following his time in service, he returned home and picked up again doing body work and painting large trucks and he also drove large trucks.   He opened and managed the Econo Lodge in Walterboro with his first wife Frances during the 1980’s.  He was married to Frances for thirty-four years before her death in 1999.

Jimmie then married Joan Dantzler McMillan in 2000 and they also enjoyed a very happy and blessed marriage.  He had such a tender love for all of his family and friends and was so proud of all of their children, grandsons and great grandchildren.

His first love was his Savior Jesus Christ and he loved to talk to others about how good God was to him.  He loved to attend gospel singings and preaching, traveling around to visit other churches and for revivals and singing conventions.  In Jimmie’s last years he was still able to attend services at Land’s End Seaside Church from his golf cart.  When health failed more, he still enjoyed tv preaching and videos to hear the Word.

A gifted master carpenter, he was an awesome finishing carpenter and in his spare time enjoyed following his Daddy’s craft.  Before he became ill, he enjoyed creating many beautiful works such as a fireplace mantles, moldings and even a church podium.

Jimmie loved to plant a garden and enjoy its harvest while he was able, helping also with preserving the food.

Surviving are: his wife Joan Dantzler McMillan; three children, James Michael McMillan, Sr. (Robyn), Travis J. Godley, Jr. (Holly), and Denise Godley Givens (Joseph); and a sister, Ronella Ida McMillan Winchester.  There are six grandchildren, James Michael McMillan, Jr. (Laura), Justin McMillan (Michelle), Noah Givens, Jonah Givens, Micah Givens, and Ezrah Givens, as well as two great grandchildren, Chasen McMillan and Ensley McMillan.   He was preceded in death by siblings, Charles H. McMillan, Jr., Beulah Urell McMillan, Hezekiah Henry McMillan, and Thomas Riddick McMillan.
