Jessie Lee (Polk) Breland

March 3, 1930 — March 21, 2015

Mrs. Jessie Lee Polk Breland, 85, of Bethel Road, Ruffin, went to be with the Lord Saturday, March 21, 2015 at her residence, with her family at her side.  She was the widow of James Harris Breland, Sr.

Funeral services will be held 2 pm, Tuesday, March 24, 2015 at Bethel United Methodist Church, Ruffin Charge.  Interment will follow in Breland Cemetery in Ruffin.  The family will receive friends Tuesday from 1 pm until the hour of service at the church.

Mrs. Breland was born March 3, 1930 in Islandton and was a daughter of the late John Berry Polk and Lillie Jessie DuBois Polk.  She was a retired clerk from Thompson Dime Store in Walterboro.  She was a member of Bethel United Methodist Church in Ruffin, where she was a member of the choir.  She was a volunteer at Colleton Medical Center for 17 years, where she had the nickname “Cackleberry”.  Mrs. Jessie was a country girl at heart, who loved working in her garden and on the farm.  She will always be remembered for her kind heart, giving spirit and the love she had for everyone, especially her family.

Surviving are: children, James Harris Breland, Jr. and his wife Nancy of Walterboro, Joye B. Bryan and her husband David of Ruffin, Gail B. Bryan and her husband Jimmy of Walterboro, and Peggy Whetstone of Branchville; sisters, Matred Roberts of Ruffin and Alma Mae Breland of Ruffin; 6 grandchildren; and 13 great grandchildren.  She was preceded in death by a brother, Marshall Polk; and a sister, Dorothy Byrd.

The family would like to thank Kindred Hospice and Hospice of South Carolina for all of the love and care they have given to Mrs. Jessie and her family during this time.
