Mr. Jerry Mendel Craven, Sr., affectionately known by all as J.M., age 82, died Monday evening, September 7, 2009, at the Heritage Health Care Center in Walterboro. He was the husband of the late Mrs. Lelia Francis Varnadoe Craven.



Funeral services will be conducted 2 oclock Thursday afternoon, September 10, 2009 from The Brice W. Herndon and Sons Funeral Chapel, Walterboro with The Reverend Jerome Hodge officiating. Interment will follow in Peniel United Methodist Church Cemetery, Peniel Road, Walterboro.



Mr. Craven was born March 31, 1927, in Colleton County and was the youngest born and last surviving of ten children of the late Lonnie VonLehe Craven and the late Mary Bootle Craven. He served his country faithfully in the United States Marine Corps and was a retired mechanic from Big Survey Plantation. He possessed a love of guitars and old time country music as well as mechanic work of all types, especially on motors.



Surviving are: a son, Jerry M. Craven, Jr. and his wife Julie of Walterboro; and four daughters, Deborah Craven Marsh and her husband Charles of West Columbia, Cynthia Craven Baldwin and her husband Emerson of Bennetts Point, Jackie Craven Craven and her husband Carl of Green Pond, and Wanda Craven Eason of Walterboro. There are fourteen grandchildren and twenty great grandchildren; as well as several nieces and nephews that also survive. He was preceded in death by two grandchildren, Rowdy Sam Craven and Kimberly Anne Lowery.
