Biography
Mrs. Jennie Carter Smoak, 90, of Lowcountry Highway in the heart of the Sniders Community of Ruffin, entered into her eternal rest Sunday morning, June 26, 2011, at her residence under the care of Ameritus Hospice. She was the wife of Mr. Benjamin Leo Smoak for over fifty years at the time of his death.
Funeral services will be conducted 10 o'clock Wednesday morning, June 29, 2011, from The Brice W. Herndon and Sons Funeral Chapel, Walterboro, with The Reverend Ricky Crosby and The Reverend Ned Frownfelter officiating. Interment will follow in Shiloh Baptist Churchyard, 10565 Lowcountry Highway, Ruffin.
Mrs. Smoak was born March 6, 1921, and was a daughter of the late Jasper and Elizabeth Carter. In earlier years she worked as a seamstress in various manufacturing plants in the Lowcountry; however, during last several years of her life she made her work her home and tending to the daily responsibilities of a housewife. She was a longtime member of Shiloh Baptist Church, and will be most remembered for the overly watchful eye she kept on both the church and the cemetery from her home which is located just across Highway 21. Mrs. Jennie shall always be remembered by all of those knew her.
Surviving are: her daughter, Martha Jo "Sissy" Smoak Rahn and her husband Kenneth Franklin "Kenny" Rahn of Sniders; and a sister, Ruth C. Gibbs of Summerville. There are three grandchildren, Joanna Renee Dubose of Ruffin, Brian Rutherford of Charleston, and Kevin Rutherford of Goose Creek; three great grandchildren, Jenna Renee Dubose, Jessica Ann Dubose, and Taylor Rutherford that also survive; along with her daughter-in-law, Marie Smoak of Charleston and a special caretaker and friend, Lila Sloan of Walterboro. Her only son, William Graham "Duck" Smoak, preceded her in death this past January (2011).
