James E. Wilson, 89, of Smoaks, South Carolina, passed away peacefully on June 30, 2026. He was born on November 16, 1936, to the late Lewis and Kathleen Wilson.

James proudly served his country in the United States Army and with the Seabees. Following his military service, he enjoyed a long career at the Charleston Naval Shipyard until his retirement.

Retirement marked the beginning of one of James’ greatest passions. For more than 30 years, he was a familiar face at area flea markets, where he loved buying, selling, and, most of all, visiting with customers and fellow vendors. He treasured the friendships he made and the conversations shared over the years.

For the past four years, James called Veterans Victory House his home. He quickly became part of the community, making many dear friends and enjoying card games, especially poker. He also looked forward to visits to the Walterboro Elks Lodge, where he enjoyed steak nights, bingo, and the fellowship of its members.

The family extends their heartfelt gratitude to the compassionate staff of Veterans Victory House for the exceptional kindness, care, and friendship they showed James. They made him feel truly at home, and their love and dedication brought great comfort to both James and his family.

James is survived by his two sons, Kevin O. Wilson (Edie) of Elko, South Carolina, and Jay E. Wilson of Smoaks, South Carolina, as well as numerous step-grandchildren.

James will be remembered for his friendly smile, his big blue eyes, his gift for conversation, his love of people, and the countless friendships he formed throughout his life. His kindness, sense of humor, and warm spirit will be deeply missed by all who knew him.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made in James’ honor to Veterans Victory House or the Walterboro Elks Lodge, organizations that brought him great joy and companionship during his later years.
