James Arden Strickland, known by all as “Jimmy”, age 82, of Walterboro, entered into rest Saturday morning, April 18, 2026, at his home while under the care of Crescent Hospice and surrounded by his loving family.
Born December 17, 1943, in the Buckhead Community of Smoaks, South Carolina, he was a son of the late Charlie W. Strickland and the late Roxie Hagan Strickland. Having began with the United States Postal Service in 1966, he retired as Postmaster from the Cottageville Post Office after forty-three years of service. He was very proud of the fact that he was the last carrier to deliver by bicycle. He was a graduate of Bells High School where he lettered in Basketball and Baseball – having worn jersey No. 21 in Basketball, which was ultimately retired following his graduation. He was a member of Good Shepherd Evangelical Lutheran Church in Walterboro and will always be remembered for his love of the South Carolina Gamecocks, boating, and spending time with his family. He always excelled at sports and training horses.
Surviving are: his wife of sixty-two years, Mrs. Ilona Hiers Strickland; two children, Jaymie Strickland and Helana Westbury; five grandchildren, Tyler Westbury (Sydney), Hagan Strickland, Grayce Strickland, Madison Strickland, and the one who knew him as “Poppy” - Braeden Westbury; a great grandson, Ledger Westbury; a daughter-in-law, Lori Strickland; two sisters, Gladys Myers (Alfred) and Wanda Schurlknight; two brothers, Feddie Strickland (Ann) and David Strickland (Sara); as well as a host of nieces and nephews to include a special niece, Stacy Tolson. He was preceded in death by a son, Brantley Strickland; brothers, Johnny Strickland and Billy Strickland; and a sister, Christine Robertson.
In lieu of flowers, the family has requested that memorials be directed in his memory to: Good Shepherd Lutheran Church, 106 May Street, Walterboro, South Carolina 29488.
Funeral services will be conducted at 3 o’clock Friday afternoon, April 24, 2026, from Good Shepherd Evangelical Lutheran Church, 106 May Street, Walterboro. The Reverend Judy McGuire officiating.
