James "Jim" O'Conner

July 28, 1933 — October 5, 2013


Mr. James Andrew “Jim” O’Conner, Jr., 80, of Rincon, Georgia, entered into eternal rest Saturday, October 5, 2013 at St. Joseph’s Hospital in Savannah.

Funeral services will be held 2 pm, Tuesday, October 8, 2013 at The Brice W. Herndon and Sons Funeral Home, Varnville-Hampton Chapel. Interment with full military honors will follow in Anderson Cemetery in Cummings.

Mr. O’Conner was born July 28, 1933 in Charlotte, NC and was a son of the late James Andrew O’Conner, Sr. and Senna Manning O’Conner. He served his country faithfully in the United States Army for over 20 years and retired as a Chief Warrant Officer. While in the Army, he served two tours in Vietnam and received many medals including the Bronze Star, 4 Air Medals and the Army Commendation Medal. After his time in the Army, he owned and operated O’Conner’s Auto Shop and also owned a Real Estate and Land Management Company.

Mr. O’Conner and his wife lived in Cummings, South Carolina for 10 years, where he was an active member of the North District School System and was the PTO President. After moving back to Rincon, Georgia, he became an active member of Rincon United Methodist Church and was a member of the Shriner’s. He dearly loved his community and was very active in many civic organizations, always willing to do whatever he could to promote and build his community.

Surviving are: his wife, Carolyn Anderson O’Conner of Rincon, GA; children, Bonnie Deaton of Wilmington Island, GA and Danny O’Conner of Rincon, GA; stepchildren, Melissa Sentman of Hampton, SC and Eric “Chip” Bishop of Statesboro, GA; 2 brothers; 2 sisters; 7 grandchildren; and 12 great grandchildren.
