The Reverend James Henry Mizell, affectionately known by many as Preacher Jim, age 67, of 18011 Augusta Highway, Round O, entered into his state of eternal rest Thursday afternoon, July 22, 2010, at his home with his loving wife at his side and under the care of Heartland Hospice and with many special faithful loving care-givers.



A celebration of the life he lived and his service to God will be conducted 3 oclock Sunday afternoon, July 25, 2010, from The Brice W. Herndon and Sons Funeral Chapel, Walterboro with The Reverend Randall Baker, The Reverend Naveen Balakrishnan, and The Reverend Bobby Ethridge officiating. Interment will follow in Pleasant Grove Baptist Church Cemetery, 7345 Jefferies Highway, Walterboro.



The family has requested that all attending pastors serve as honorary escorts and they would need to assemble at The Funeral Chapel at 2:30 that afternoon.



The Reverend Mizell was born November 17, 1942, in Reevesville, and was a son of Mrs. Blanche Walters Mizell and the late John Henry Mizell. He served his country faithfully in the SC National Guard Reserves and then received his Batchelor of Arts in Religion from Charleston Southern University and his Master of Divinity from Southeastern Baptist Theological Seminary in Wake Forest, NC. He dedicated his life to serving the Lord and his fellow mankind. He held pastorates at Zion Baptist Church, Walterboro; Bethlehem Baptist Church, Round O; Hopewell Baptist Church, Parkers Ferry; Edisto Beach Baptist Church, Edisto Beach; Macedonia Baptist Church, Raleigh, NC; First Baptist Church, Spruce Pine NC; and then his final appointment at First Baptist Church, Walhalla, where he was known as the Bubble Gum Pastor and the Hardees Pastor, where he severed for eighteen years until his retirement. At WGOG radio station in Walhalla he did devotions. He served as Chaplain for the City of Walhalla Police Department and the Soil Conservation Department of Oconee County and was honored as the Chaplain of the year in SC. After retiring and moving their home to Round O, they moved their church membership to Pleasant Grove Baptist Church in Walterboro. He authored three devotional books and wrote a weekly devotional column in The Press and Standard. His favorite pastimes included fishing and hunting. He will always be remembered as a friend to all, loving life and living each day to the fullest.



Surviving in addition to his mother of Round O are: his loving and devoted wife of forty-four years, Mrs. Brenda Byrd Mizell; a brother, David Mizell (Linda) of Ridgeville; and two sisters, Emily Shieder Craven (Paul) of Round O and Jan Canaday (Ernest) of Walterboro; as well as several nieces and nephews. Jim was a father of none, but will be cherished as a father to many. He was preceded in death by a brother, Edward Mizell.



For those that so desire, the family has suggested that memorial contributions be directed in his memory to the following: Hopewell Baptist Church, Outreach Center, 6869 Parkers Ferry Road, Adams Run, SC 29426; or to, First Baptist Church of Walhalla, 403 East Main Street, Walhalla, SC 29691.
