Mr. James William Ackerman, affectionately known by many as “Jim”, age 80, of North Charleston, entered into rest Sunday morning, September 6, 2015, at the Ralph H. Johnson Veteran’s Administration Hospital in Charleston. He was the loving husband of forty-seven years to the late Mrs. Carol Jean Nelson Ackerman.
Funeral services will be conducted 1 o’clock Wednesday afternoon, September 9, 2015, from The Brice W. Herndon and Sons Funeral Chapel, Walterboro. The Reverend William Hoff officiating. Interment will follow in Hughes Cemetery, Wesley Chapel Road, Cottageville.
He was born to the late Charles Malachi and Ruby Mae on August 16, 1935 in Cottageville. He served our country faithfully in the United States Air Force during the Korean Conflict. He was the founding owner of Palmetto Chimney Sweeps in Charleston and was a longtime brick mason who, throughout the Lowcountry, was known by many as a craftsman at his trade. He was of the United Methodist faith and had attended Riverbluff Baptist Church.
Surviving are: a daughter, Lori Ann Roten and her husband Bill of Ladson; two sons, James Allan Ackerman and his wife Kelly of North Charleston and Brad Anderson and his wife Marla of Grand Forks, North Dakota; a sister, Jeanette Ackerman Reeves of Cottageville; and his beloved companion “Little Missy”. There are four grandchildren, Daniel Ackerman, Bryan Roten and his wife Melinda, Katy Roten, and Ashley Krom and her husband Casey; three great grandchildren, Cayden, Aristotle, and Bryson; as well as numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins. He was preceded in death by a daughter, Sherri Lynn Ackerman.
In lieu of flowers, the family has requested that memorial contributions be directed in his memory to the following: Hospice of Charleston, 4975 Lacross Rd, Suite 200, Charleston, SC 29406; or to, Ralph H. Johnson Veteran Administration Hospital, 109 Bee Street, Charleston, SC 29401.
