Mr. James Cortland Heape, 86, of Cummings, passed away Sunday, July 31, 2016 at his residence. He was the beloved husband of Betty Mixson Heape.
The funeral service will be held 3 pm Tuesday, August 2, 2016 at Grace Baptist Church, 2862 Bamberg Highway, Hampton. Burial will follow in Zahler Cemetery, Salkehatchie Road, Early Branch.
Mr. Heape was born August 21, 1929, in Hampton County, and was the son of the late Benjamin Heape and Minnie Youmans Heape. Mr. Heape served his country faithfully in the United States Army during the Korean Conflict and retired from Westinghouse. He was a member of Grace Baptist Church. He had served as a former deacon at Mt. Olive Baptist Church in Early Branch and Ridgeville Baptist Church in Yemassee. He loved fishing, carpentry, woodworking and took great pride in his garden. Most of all he loved his family and friends.
Surviving are: his wife of 64 years, Betty Mixson Heape; daughters, Janice Sheffield of Hampton, Gail Stone and her husband Troy of Varnville, Angela Omeś and her husband John of Cummings, and Renee Stanley and her husband John of Cummings. 10 grandchildren, Johnny Sheffield, Jr., Kimberly Sheffield Webster, Heather Sheffield Ayers, Shannon Stone, Katrina Grant, Troy James Stone, John Omeś, III, Amber Omeś Rounds, Austin Stanley, and Holly Stanley; and 22 great grandchildren also survive. Also surviving is a brother, Darrell Heape and his wife, Patricia of Early Branch. Mr. Heape was predeceased by 3 sisters, Violet Barber, Alice Harvey, and Teddy Nix; and 4 brothers, Benjamin Heape, Richard Heape, Charles Heape and William Heape.
