James W. Barnes, Jr., affectionately known as "JW," 74, passed away on June 17, 2026, at his residence under the care of Edisto Home Care and Hospice. He was the son of the late JW and Lois Kinard Barnes. He leaves behind a legacy of hard work, generosity, and devotion to family and community.
A lifelong farmer, JW dedicated his life to the land he loved. From dawn until dusk, he could often be found tending his fields, growing the watermelons that made him a well-known and respected farmer throughout South Carolina and many other states. Farming was more than a livelihood to JW—it was his passion, his calling, and a reflection of the values he lived by every day. His faith in the Lord was unwavering. He was a lifelong devoted and active member of St. Johns Baptist Church.
JW took great pride in the fruits of his labor and found joy in sharing his harvest with others. His watermelons brought smiles to countless friends, neighbors, and community members over the years. His generosity and willingness to help others made him a beloved figure throughout the community he cherished so deeply.
While JW's accomplishments as a farmer were many, his greatest pride and most meaningful contribution was his family. He loved them wholeheartedly and worked tirelessly to provide for them, setting an example of dedication, integrity, and perseverance that will continue to inspire future generations.
JW will be remembered for his strong work ethic, kind heart, humble spirit, and unwavering commitment to those he loved. His presence will be deeply missed, but the seeds of love, faith, and hard work that he planted throughout his life will continue to grow in the lives of all who knew him. May his memory be a blessing to his family, friends, and his community.
JW is survived by the love of his life, Donna Deer Barnes; three sons, James William Barnes, III(Bridgette), Jonathan Kevin Barnes (Kristina), and Joshua Oliver Barnes (Ashley); 9 grandchildren, Jayden Barnes Steadman (Trevor), Jordan Barnes Griffith (Kenlee), Jonathan Kevin Barnes, Jr., Broghan Olivia Barnes, Madison Rebecca Barnes, Rileigh Anne Barnes, Joshua Oliver Barnes, II, William Michael Barnes, and Brody Ford Barnes; great granddaughter, Charley Kate Steadman; and sisters, Berdie M. Maxwell, and Bobbie B. Price (Dean); as well as many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by two sisters, JaReida B. McKenzie and Peggy B. Stiltz.
