Mr. Jack Walton Beverly, Jr., 71, of 1291 Azalea Patch Road, Ruffin, entered into his eternal rest Wednesday afternoon, July 8, 2009, at the Roper Hospital in Charleston.
Funeral services will be conducted at 11 oclock Saturday morning, July 11, 2009, from The Brice W. Herndon and Sons Funeral Chapel, Walterboro with The Reverend David Cox and The Reverend James Grubb officiating. Interment with full military honors provided by the United States Army will follow in Greenlawn Memorial Gardens, Hendersonville Highway, Walterboro. The family has requested that attending members of Bells Masonic Lodge, No. 236 serve as honorary escorts.
Mr. Beverly was born February 8, 1938, in Ruffin and was a son of the late Jack Walton Beverly, Sr. and the late Bernice Breland Beverly. He was a graduate of Walterboro High School and attended Palmetto Military Academy at Fort Jackson, South Carolina. Jack dedicated his life to work and the service of others. He retired from the Army National Guard where he achieved the rank of Sergeant and after his time as an enlisted man he continued on and served in the Army Reserve. He also was a fireman having retired from the Parris Island Fire Department. Known for his strong work ethic, Jack didnt stop at retirement. He continued to work, having been a meter reader for ten years for Coastal Electric Cooperative until 2000 and also worked in a part-time capacity at Enterprise Hardware for ten years.
He was a lifelong member of Tabor United Methodist Church where he was active in many aspects of the churchs work. At his church he was Chairman of the Board for several years, and was also a Trustee, served on the cemetery committee, Sunday School teacher, and had formerly worked with the churchs youth group. He took his civic duties as an obligation. He was a member of Bells Masonic Lodge, No. 236, Ancient Free Masons and was a honorary member of Evergreen Masonic Lodge in Hampton. He was also a member of Omar Shrine Temple and the York Rite. He will be remembered for the joy being outside in his yard afforded him, working in his garden, riding his golf cart, or spending time with his cats.
Surviving are: his wife, Mrs. Honorie Smith Beverly; three daughters, Robin B. Stephens and her husband Rudy of Columbia, Jacqueline B. Whittington and her husband Mark of Columbia, and Marjorie Edna Beverly of Walterboro; three step-daughters, Debbie Cody and her husband Mark of Columbia, Wanda Phillips and her husband Mickey of Varnville, and Amy Steinmeyer of Columbia; a brother, Robert Carl Beverly of Walterboro; and a sister, Helen B. Crosby and husband Renferd of Ruffin. There are six grandchildren, Nicole Stephens of Columbia, Christian Whittington of Columbia, Jason Ginn of Columbia, Katie Phillips of Varnville, Jordan Steinmeyer and Wilson Steinmeyer both of Columbia; as well as several nieces and nephews that also survive. He was preceded in death by a grandson Patrick Stephens.
